THE SAUCONY KINVARA TURNS 9
HISTORY OF A RUNNING SHOE: THE SAUCONY KINVARA
The Kinvara from Saucony is nine! And there’s a reason this shoe has become one of the most sought after lightweight running shoes and it’s continuing strong in its ninth year on the running shoe circuit.
The Kinvara was born out of customer demand (that’s always a good start) for a training shoe with a more natural ride; a shoe that feels light and fast that isn’t going to get you injured.
Back in 2009 Saucony launched the Kinvara and it was a running shoe ahead of its time. They stripped down the design to just the basics of what was needed without compromising on cushioning. The 4mm drop was pioneering at the time and led the way for both Saucony and the rest of the running shoe industry
The Kinvara allowed the runner the feel of the road – that was the goal and runners LOVED it.
WHAT’S NEW WITH KINVARA 9 FROM SAUCONY
There’s always the mantra, ‘if it’s not broken, don’t fix it!’ and Saucony appreciates that. However, there is always room for some tweaks as technology and design develops and matures.

JACKRABBIT RUNNER PAT JACOBS GIVES HIS SHOUT TO THE KINVARA 9
Pat Jacobs: Seasoned runner, seasoned JackRabbit: I have been a long time fan of the Kinvara. I am one of those runners that has worn it since the first edition of the model came out nine years ago. So you could say me and the Kinvara really have run some miles together!
While Saucony has done a great job keeping the Kinvara lightweight and fast, there have been a few versions of the Kinvara that have not lived up to the high standards they set with the Kinvara 1 and 2. With this in mind, I am always excited and a little nervous when I unbox a new pair; will the new version live up to my expectations!
There has been a bit of a difference with fit and feel underneath the foot along the different versions, and I was very hopeful that the Kinvara 9 would return to the feel I got from the Kinvara 1 – “track spike” type fit that feels forgiving enough for a long run. I know this is a lot to ask from a running shoe!
From the first run in the Kinvara 9 I knew this would be one of my favorite editions yet. The feel from the moment I slipped on the shoe felt like a lightweight, sock-like upper while still hugging my foot enough to feel like I could get out and run fast.
Underneath my foot, I noticed the familiar low profile, aggressive heel-toe transition while still feeling like I could take these out for my easy 10-12 mile long runs. So far I have logged about 120 miles in the shoe, and I still believe this is the first edition of the Kinvara to replicate the feel of the 1st and 2nd versions of the shoe. An added bonus – these seem to be holding up very nicely for such a lightweight and low profile shoe!
Overall, Saucony did a great job with the Kinvara 9. They clearly took feedback from previous versions (we love a company that listens!) and made sure this one appealed to the runner looking for the trademark feel that the Kinvara has become so well known for.
Right, all that talking about running has me psyched; I’m off for a run!
