DAVID BROWN: ON ATHLETE AND THE WORLD’S FASTEST BLIND MAN

David Brown | On Athlete

Running 100m in under 11 seconds takes years of training, perseverance and complete determination. Doing it without eyesight: impossible…right?

But David Brown always kept dreaming of the impossible. Today, he’s the world’s fastest blind man. How did he do it? Find out in Untethered: The David Brown Story.

David Brown & Jerome Avery Adapt

Original story from On Running – Read fully story here

When David and Jerome sprint in perfect symmetry, it is the result of countless hours of training and constant adaptation. As the pair explain in the short film above, David is constantly taking cues from his guide Jerome, fine tuning the run from the gun to the finish line. We learn how adaptation has turned these two powerful individuals into an unstoppable team.

David Brown’s story is one of overcoming the odds. A three-time gold medalist, two-time record breaker and the first totally blind athlete to run 100m in under 11 seconds, his story transcends sport. To say he is an inspiration is putting it lightly.

ON RUNNING: SUSTAINABILITY MVP

On Sustainability

Sustainability is on the forefront of brand initiatives and has been for years. For brands like On Running, sustainability is something that’s worked into the fiber of the brand. And to that we say HELL YES. More, please!

We love Mother Earth and need to do everything in our power to protect her. From what we wear to what we buy, every decision matters and you can do your part every day and choose to make a difference.

On has made really exciting moves to reduce environmental footprint, and they definitely are not stopping! Saving the planet is a team sport, so we’re here at JackRabbit to shout those awesome efforts from the rooftop and help educate customers and staff about how big of a difference it makes.

Here are just a few ways On is making strides in sustainability…

NEW PACKAGING

You may have noticed a change in how On shoe boxes and hang tags look recently. Well that’s because On has changed their packaging to be more sustainable! You’ll start to see fewer black and white On shoe boxes and more brown boxes and apparel packaging/tags soon.

That’s because On has switched over to 100% recycled materials for sneakers and socks, and 99.9% recycled materials in apparel packaging! The boxes will now be mainly brown (no ink) with minimal water-based ink instead of the old fully PVC ink black boxes. Yearly, this will save about 160 tonnes of CO2!

Updating the all-black packaging for a lighter more sustainable alternative means On can use less ink in printing packaging. Plus the ink that’s now visible on the outside of the shoe box is a water-based alternative to the previous (plastic-derived) PVC inks, which is much better for the environment.

“Letting go of the all-black branding was a discussion for us. It’s quite bold I think, to do this as a young company. But when we looked at the numbers, it stopped becoming a question of if, and rather when,” says Maya Martin, Product Design. “The result is fresh, bright and optimistic and it still keeps the minimalistic, uncomplicated design we love.”

By switching to new packaging, each year On is projected to save at least:

  • 7 tonnes of black ink
  • 18 tonnes of paper
  • 15 tonnes of plastic
  • 160 tonnes of CO2

MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS

Materials used in our industry are responsible for up to 80% of a company’s environmental footprint, so On made them a top priority. With sustainability at the core of how On works as a company, they don’t believe performance and sustainability are exclusive, but rather complimentary concepts to one another.

By introducing more recycled materials, reducing their CO2 footprint and creating circular systems for product life cycles, On is making real, impactful change while still producing the same premium performance shoes and apparel we all know and love.

ON CLOUDSTRATUS REVIEW

On Cloudstratus Review

THE BUZZ

Now it its second edition, the On Cloudstratus is a high-mileage, everyday trainer built for cushion, comfort and support.

It features an innovative CloudTec cushioning and support system that serves up a smooth, energetic and durable ride.

On Cloudstratus Review

WHAT’S NEW

The new Cloudstratus has been enhanced with a re-engineered midsole platform, a roomier forefoot, an improved outsole, a curvier rocker profile and an updated gusseted tongue. Those changes all contribute to a better fit, softer feel and improved overall performance.

The two-layer CloudTec midsole cushioning system has been updated with a softer Helion foam. The foam compresses and rebounds more effectively without bottoming out. It’s soft and responsive, not soft and mushy like the super-soft foam in some lighter training shoes.

The Speedboard plastic plate embedded in the midsole and rocker geometry are the key to both a smooth ride and slight propulsive feeling as the foot rolls through to the toe-off moment of a stride.

The rocker profile creates a significant toe-spring design in the forefoot to encourage forward propulsion, while the Speedboard provides a firm feeling ideal for launching off the ground at toe-off.

The new, one-piece upper is lighter, more breathable and more conducive to natural foot flex than the double-layered upper of the previous edition. It gives this version of the Cloudstratus a streamlined look and contributes to the improved fit, feel and ride.

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

The new Cloudstratus fits true to size with a snug, narrow/medium fit in the heel and midfoot but a notably wider fit in the forefoot.

They feel comfortable soft when you step into them and lace them up. This is thanks in part to the foamy heel collar, comfy tongue and cushy sock liner. However, there’s a sensation of both soft and semi-firm the moment you start running in them.

In fact, the Cloudstratus has a firm flex sensation that’s similar to a racing shoe with a carbon-fiber plate, even though it’s not nearly as light and energetic.

The eight individual CloudTec midsole cushioning pods compress according to a runner’s specific gait pattern. The pods support the foot with a near-custom ride as it rolls to the forefoot.

The ride is smooth, moderately soft and noticeably snappy from slow to moderately fast paces.

WHO IT’S BEST FOR

Runners who log moderate to high-mileage volume every week and appreciate near-maximal cushioning will love the new Cloudstratus.

It’s a trainer that offers a good mix of comfort, durability and support for daily training and long runs.

It’s resilient and bouncy enough to provide enough energetic pop for some faster workouts, including longer intervals and tempo runs.

It has enough cushioning and support for running a half marathon or marathon, but it’s not quite light enough for running all-out track workouts or racing shorter distances.

ON CLOUDSTRATUS PROS

The fit has really been improved to accommodate more foot shapes with a more spacious toe box, improved heel hold, gusseted tongue, improved sock liner and updated “star” lacing system.

The enhancements have resulted in an adaptable, semi-custom, wrap-like fit that’s big on both comfort and performance.

This is one of the most eco-friendly shoes on the market. The shoe is made with 75 percent of the polyester content and 20 percent of the entire shoe made from recycled materials.

That includes the tongue, vamp, interior lining, sock liner, laces and upper are made entirely from recycled polyester.

The outsole has a redesigned tread pattern and a better mix of blown rubber and carbon rubber. This has improved the traction, softness and feel of this shoe.

A slightly wider, beveled channel underneath the foot allows for better heel-to-toe transitions, improved flex and, most importantly, fewer pebbles being caught on the run.

ON CLOUDSTRATUS CONS

The Cloudstratus isn’t heavy, but it’s not quite as light as some high-mileage trainers in the same class.

2021 ON CLOUDFLOW REVIEW

THE BUZZ

Now it its third edition, the On Cloudflow is a lightweight, low-to-the-ground neutral training shoe designed for efficient, quick-cadence running.

It’s built with On’s Cloud cushioning technology and features a semi-firm plate embedded in the midsole that loads each stride with shock-absorbing cushioning and a jolt of energy for a smooth, snappy ride.

On Cloudflow Review

WHAT’S NEW

The biggest updates to the On Cloudflow are a better-fitting heel cup and new engineered mesh upper made from 70 percent recycled materials.

The ultralight Helion midsole superfoam provides a fast, responsive feeling with fully cushioned road protection and exceptional durability. Unlike some midsole materials that falter in hot or cold weather, the Helion cushioning performs equally as well in all temperatures without losing its performance qualities.

The heel cup has been improved to make the rearfoot fit feel more precise and locked down. It gives the Cloudflow a reassuringly secure sensation that contributes to its performance-oriented agility, especially when cornering or running hills at faster speeds.

With small sections of grippy rubber and an enhanced traction pattern on the bottom of most of the Cloud pods, the Cloudflow’s outsole serves up exceptional hold for agile and reliable road running. Although a few pods have exposed foam facing the ground, it doesn’t affect the long-timer durability or performance of the shoe.

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

The Cloudflow fits true to size with a medium-volume interior, an improved fit in the heel, a secure connection at the arch/saddle area and just enough wiggle room in the forefoot.

When you step into these shoes and lace them up, you’ll feel a unique sensation of comfort and precision that comes from the cleanly designed upper and soft but spartan interior that securely holds your feet in place.

The ride is moderately soft and buttery smooth, with an easy-flexing demeanor that’s energized by the semi-firm polypropylene Speedboard embedded in the midsole.

It’s not an overly cushy ride compared to other shoes, but it’s soft enough to reduce the impacts of the ground while also promoting efficient running form.

WHO IT’S BEST FOR

Runners who prefer a moderate level of cushioning with an intuitive feel for the ground will love the new Cloudflow. Its lightweight, energetic and agile vibe is ideal for all types of up-tempo running, including fartlek workouts, interval sessions and short-distance racing.

Although it’s best for shorter and faster running, it could serve as a long-run shoe or everyday trainer for runners who are light on their feet and appreciate a proprioceptive connection to the ground.

ON CLOUDFLOW PROS

On’s Cloud cushioning technology is the most unique midsole configuration in the running shoe industry. It’s comprised of 18 individually shaped CloudTec pods under each foot that offer a high level of cushioning and responsiveness while allowing your feet to roll naturally and consistently from heel to toe.

The cleanly designed engineered mesh upper not only creates a more streamlined look, but it offers seamless comfort and connectivity at higher speeds. Plus, the Cloudflow makes a strong environmental statement, given that the upper is made of 70 percent polyester content and the overall composition is comprised of 20 percent recycled material.

The clean, almost artful design of the Cloudflow creates amazing aesthetic appeal. The look, feel and comfort make it one of those shoes you want to wear when you’re not running.

On Cloudflow Review

ON CLOUDFLOW CONS

The Cloudflow doesn’t have the depth or soft bounciness of some other training shoes available at JackRabbit.com. If you don’t like a shoe with a low-to-the-ground, semi-firm feeling, consider the On Cloud X for a more cushioned ride.
