Now it its second edition, the On Cloudstratus is a high-mileage, everyday trainer built for cushion, comfort and support.
It features an innovative CloudTec cushioning and support system that serves up a smooth, energetic and durable ride.
The new Cloudstratus has been enhanced with a re-engineered midsole platform, a roomier forefoot, an improved outsole, a curvier rocker profile and an updated gusseted tongue. Those changes all contribute to a better fit, softer feel and improved overall performance.
The two-layer CloudTec midsole cushioning system has been updated with a softer Helion foam. The foam compresses and rebounds more effectively without bottoming out. It’s soft and responsive, not soft and mushy like the super-soft foam in some lighter training shoes.
The Speedboard plastic plate embedded in the midsole and rocker geometry are the key to both a smooth ride and slight propulsive feeling as the foot rolls through to the toe-off moment of a stride.
The rocker profile creates a significant toe-spring design in the forefoot to encourage forward propulsion, while the Speedboard provides a firm feeling ideal for launching off the ground at toe-off.
The new, one-piece upper is lighter, more breathable and more conducive to natural foot flex than the double-layered upper of the previous edition. It gives this version of the Cloudstratus a streamlined look and contributes to the improved fit, feel and ride.
The new Cloudstratus fits true to size with a snug, narrow/medium fit in the heel and midfoot but a notably wider fit in the forefoot.
They feel comfortable soft when you step into them and lace them up. This is thanks in part to the foamy heel collar, comfy tongue and cushy sock liner. However, there’s a sensation of both soft and semi-firm the moment you start running in them.
In fact, the Cloudstratus has a firm flex sensation that’s similar to a racing shoe with a carbon-fiber plate, even though it’s not nearly as light and energetic.
The eight individual CloudTec midsole cushioning pods compress according to a runner’s specific gait pattern. The pods support the foot with a near-custom ride as it rolls to the forefoot.
The ride is smooth, moderately soft and noticeably snappy from slow to moderately fast paces.
WHO IT’S BEST FOR
Runners who log moderate to high-mileage volume every week and appreciate near-maximal cushioning will love the new Cloudstratus.
It’s a trainer that offers a good mix of comfort, durability and support for daily training and long runs.
It’s resilient and bouncy enough to provide enough energetic pop for some faster workouts, including longer intervals and tempo runs.
It has enough cushioning and support for running a half marathon or marathon, but it’s not quite light enough for running all-out track workouts or racing shorter distances.
ON CLOUDSTRATUS PROS
The fit has really been improved to accommodate more foot shapes with a more spacious toe box, improved heel hold, gusseted tongue, improved sock liner and updated “star” lacing system.
The enhancements have resulted in an adaptable, semi-custom, wrap-like fit that’s big on both comfort and performance.
This is one of the most eco-friendly shoes on the market. The shoe is made with 75 percent of the polyester content and 20 percent of the entire shoe made from recycled materials.
That includes the tongue, vamp, interior lining, sock liner, laces and upper are made entirely from recycled polyester.
The outsole has a redesigned tread pattern and a better mix of blown rubber and carbon rubber. This has improved the traction, softness and feel of this shoe.
A slightly wider, beveled channel underneath the foot allows for better heel-to-toe transitions, improved flex and, most importantly, fewer pebbles being caught on the run.
ON CLOUDSTRATUS CONS
The Cloudstratus isn’t heavy, but it’s not quite as light as some high-mileage trainers in the same class.
