DAVID BROWN: ON ATHLETE AND THE WORLD’S FASTEST BLIND MAN

David Brown | On Athlete

Running 100m in under 11 seconds takes years of training, perseverance and complete determination. Doing it without eyesight: impossible…right?

But David Brown always kept dreaming of the impossible. Today, he’s the world’s fastest blind man. How did he do it? Find out in Untethered: The David Brown Story.

David Brown & Jerome Avery Adapt

Original story from On Running – Read fully story here

When David and Jerome sprint in perfect symmetry, it is the result of countless hours of training and constant adaptation. As the pair explain in the short film above, David is constantly taking cues from his guide Jerome, fine tuning the run from the gun to the finish line. We learn how adaptation has turned these two powerful individuals into an unstoppable team.

David Brown’s story is one of overcoming the odds. A three-time gold medalist, two-time record breaker and the first totally blind athlete to run 100m in under 11 seconds, his story transcends sport. To say he is an inspiration is putting it lightly.

ON RUNNING: SUSTAINABILITY MVP

On Sustainability

Sustainability is on the forefront of brand initiatives and has been for years. For brands like On Running, sustainability is something that’s worked into the fiber of the brand. And to that we say HELL YES. More, please!

We love Mother Earth and need to do everything in our power to protect her. From what we wear to what we buy, every decision matters and you can do your part every day and choose to make a difference.

On has made really exciting moves to reduce environmental footprint, and they definitely are not stopping! Saving the planet is a team sport, so we’re here at JackRabbit to shout those awesome efforts from the rooftop and help educate customers and staff about how big of a difference it makes.

Here are just a few ways On is making strides in sustainability…

NEW PACKAGING

You may have noticed a change in how On shoe boxes and hang tags look recently. Well that’s because On has changed their packaging to be more sustainable! You’ll start to see fewer black and white On shoe boxes and more brown boxes and apparel packaging/tags soon.

That’s because On has switched over to 100% recycled materials for sneakers and socks, and 99.9% recycled materials in apparel packaging! The boxes will now be mainly brown (no ink) with minimal water-based ink instead of the old fully PVC ink black boxes. Yearly, this will save about 160 tonnes of CO2!

Updating the all-black packaging for a lighter more sustainable alternative means On can use less ink in printing packaging. Plus the ink that’s now visible on the outside of the shoe box is a water-based alternative to the previous (plastic-derived) PVC inks, which is much better for the environment.

“Letting go of the all-black branding was a discussion for us. It’s quite bold I think, to do this as a young company. But when we looked at the numbers, it stopped becoming a question of if, and rather when,” says Maya Martin, Product Design. “The result is fresh, bright and optimistic and it still keeps the minimalistic, uncomplicated design we love.”

By switching to new packaging, each year On is projected to save at least:

  • 7 tonnes of black ink
  • 18 tonnes of paper
  • 15 tonnes of plastic
  • 160 tonnes of CO2

MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS

Materials used in our industry are responsible for up to 80% of a company’s environmental footprint, so On made them a top priority. With sustainability at the core of how On works as a company, they don’t believe performance and sustainability are exclusive, but rather complimentary concepts to one another.

By introducing more recycled materials, reducing their CO2 footprint and creating circular systems for product life cycles, On is making real, impactful change while still producing the same premium performance shoes and apparel we all know and love.

2021 ON CLOUDFLOW REVIEW

THE BUZZ

Now it its third edition, the On Cloudflow is a lightweight, low-to-the-ground neutral training shoe designed for efficient, quick-cadence running.

It’s built with On’s Cloud cushioning technology and features a semi-firm plate embedded in the midsole that loads each stride with shock-absorbing cushioning and a jolt of energy for a smooth, snappy ride.

On Cloudflow Review

WHAT’S NEW

The biggest updates to the On Cloudflow are a better-fitting heel cup and new engineered mesh upper made from 70 percent recycled materials.

The ultralight Helion midsole superfoam provides a fast, responsive feeling with fully cushioned road protection and exceptional durability. Unlike some midsole materials that falter in hot or cold weather, the Helion cushioning performs equally as well in all temperatures without losing its performance qualities.

The heel cup has been improved to make the rearfoot fit feel more precise and locked down. It gives the Cloudflow a reassuringly secure sensation that contributes to its performance-oriented agility, especially when cornering or running hills at faster speeds.

With small sections of grippy rubber and an enhanced traction pattern on the bottom of most of the Cloud pods, the Cloudflow’s outsole serves up exceptional hold for agile and reliable road running. Although a few pods have exposed foam facing the ground, it doesn’t affect the long-timer durability or performance of the shoe.

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

The Cloudflow fits true to size with a medium-volume interior, an improved fit in the heel, a secure connection at the arch/saddle area and just enough wiggle room in the forefoot.

When you step into these shoes and lace them up, you’ll feel a unique sensation of comfort and precision that comes from the cleanly designed upper and soft but spartan interior that securely holds your feet in place.

The ride is moderately soft and buttery smooth, with an easy-flexing demeanor that’s energized by the semi-firm polypropylene Speedboard embedded in the midsole.

It’s not an overly cushy ride compared to other shoes, but it’s soft enough to reduce the impacts of the ground while also promoting efficient running form.

WHO IT’S BEST FOR

Runners who prefer a moderate level of cushioning with an intuitive feel for the ground will love the new Cloudflow. Its lightweight, energetic and agile vibe is ideal for all types of up-tempo running, including fartlek workouts, interval sessions and short-distance racing.

Although it’s best for shorter and faster running, it could serve as a long-run shoe or everyday trainer for runners who are light on their feet and appreciate a proprioceptive connection to the ground.

ON CLOUDFLOW PROS

On’s Cloud cushioning technology is the most unique midsole configuration in the running shoe industry. It’s comprised of 18 individually shaped CloudTec pods under each foot that offer a high level of cushioning and responsiveness while allowing your feet to roll naturally and consistently from heel to toe.

The cleanly designed engineered mesh upper not only creates a more streamlined look, but it offers seamless comfort and connectivity at higher speeds. Plus, the Cloudflow makes a strong environmental statement, given that the upper is made of 70 percent polyester content and the overall composition is comprised of 20 percent recycled material.

The clean, almost artful design of the Cloudflow creates amazing aesthetic appeal. The look, feel and comfort make it one of those shoes you want to wear when you’re not running.

On Cloudflow Review

ON CLOUDFLOW CONS

The Cloudflow doesn’t have the depth or soft bounciness of some other training shoes available at JackRabbit.com. If you don’t like a shoe with a low-to-the-ground, semi-firm feeling, consider the On Cloud X for a more cushioned ride.

ON CLOUDSWIFT 2021 REVIEW

THE BUZZ

The second edition of the On Cloudswift has gone through some significant changes, but it remains a lightweight, low-profile neutral trainer with a cushy, energetic vibe.

It features On’s updated CloudTec midsole cushioning technology, which offers a blend of reliable shock absorption, protection, durability and a lively feel.

On Cloudswift Review

WHAT’S NEW

Aside from the slightly reconfigured midsole, other updates to the On Cloudswift include increased rocker geometry, enhanced forefoot cushioning and a re-engineered Speedboard for a more flowy ride and snappier feeling at toe-off.

The innovative CloudTec cushioning system is the key feature of the On Cloudswift. It’s been slightly updated with a bit more Helion foam cushioning that’s been formed into more of a rocker shape. The foam chassis is slightly thicker and cushier in the rear, but it’s snappier and more energetic in the forefoot.

The Cloudswift retains its unique one-piece upper that combines the practicalities of a fully gusseted tongue with an overarching upper with a wrap-like fit. The updated saddle sidewall panels are more supportive and more comfortable as they encase your foot.

It also has a new 100 percent recycled mesh upper with more supportive sidewall panels.

On Cloudswift Review

FIT, FEEL, RIDE

The revised On Cloudswift fits true to size, but it has more of a medium- to low-volume interior with just a tiny amount of wiggle room for the toes. It’s not cramped, but it’s not wide, either. When you first step into the shoe and lace it up, it feels comfortable, secure and semi-soft.

The new upper configuration is slightly less pliable than the previous edition. The upper, combined with the new, slightly sturdier sidewall saddle supports makes for a more locked-down fit sensation.

The ride gives off soft, shock-absorbing and supportive vibes with a more distinct rolling sensation than in the past. This is generated by the new, shapelier incarnation of the Helion superfoam and rubber outsole pads.

WHO IT’S BEST FOR

Runners who appreciate neutral-oriented shoes with a moderate to high cushion-to-weight ratio will love this shoe. It’s light and agile enough to be versatile to handle a variety of workouts. It’s also cushioned enough to be durable and comfortable for long runs.

If you only want one shoe in your quiver, it’s a good one to consider.

On Cloudswift Review

PROS: ON CLOUDSWIFT

The new engineered mesh material in the upper is made from 100 percent recycled polyester, nylon and TPU materials. The upper is better integrated with the lacing system, creating better foot hold and an improved all-encompassing fit.

The cushioning in the ankle collar liner has been reduced and the heel counter band is slightly less rigid. These features actually make the shoe closure sync up more consistently.

This shoe feels moderately light when you put it on, but feels even lighter when you run in it. It is also, well-balanced with a lively feel in the midsole/outsole undercarriage.

If you previously ran in the On Cloudswift, you’ll find this new version a tiny bit softer and smoother. The new version features small but noticeable bits of improved comfort.

On Cloudswift Review

CONS: ON CLOUDSWIFT

There are no glaring drawbacks to the Cloudswift. It’s probably not the best shoe for running shorter, faster workouts on the track, but it can hold its own on tempo runs, fartlek runs and slow to moderately fast long runs.

ON CLOUDFLOW REVIEW 2020

The Cloudflow is On’s lightweight performance shoe, an incredibly flexible, fast-feeling experience  for those have high expectations from their running shoes.  Designed for both training and racing, the Cloudflow is a responsive shoe for the discerning runner.

First introduced by On in 2017 the On Cloudflow is the type of running shoe to encourage a runner to step up the pace and the distance whatever that personal goal might be.

On Running likes to refer to this as ‘your shortcut to a runner’s high.’ Customers have commented on the comfort of the shoe and lack of ‘hot spots’ on their feet while training and racing as well as the pure joy of slipping them on and running without compromise. Some say they feel they run ‘lighter’ and ‘more flexibly’.

FEATURES: THE ON CLOUDFLOW

What’s the Cloudflow About?

The On Cloudflow is a signature shoe from the On team; a performance-oriented experience worn by the likes of champion triathletes Tim Don and Javier Gomez. The Cloudflow is a shoe for marathon runners and those with a need for speed.  But even if you’re not a marathon guru, this shoe on target for any runner with a 5, 10, or half-marathon PR in their sights.

Clouds to Happiness

The On Cloudflow features eighteen ‘clouds’ or lugs on the outsole – a proprietary feature from On. These eighteen ‘clouds’ independently cushion and propel each step so when your foot touches the ground each lug is positioned in the right place.  The Cloudflow is not a highly cushioned shoe, but it’s not a minimalist shoe either.  And that’s okay, as it’s designed for speed, tempo and racing. There is a patented ‘Speedboard’ – a flex rocker in the On Cloudflow that encourages the natural rolling of the foot so it ‘flows’.

What’s new with the On Cloudflow?

A new range of colors have arrived for the season straight from the designer’s paintbox.  Add to that some on-trend apparel to complement your shoes and you’ll be ready to lay down some base training worthy of the next season ahead.

WHAT THE JACKRABBITS SAY

EMILY: MARKETING GURU RUNNING 10 MILES PER WEEK

Lowdown: No more knee pain…

‘I love, love my On Cloudflows! I’m a pretty casual (neutral) runner averaging less than 10 miles per week, but these shoes actually MAKE me want to run more miles more often. They’re super lightweight and fit my foot perfectly, which is a rarity for someone with narrow heels, high arches, high instep and wider than average toe box.

The Cloudflows feel great from the first time I put them on without even having to break them in. The best part about these shoes is the cushioning and responsiveness with landing and takeoff, especially when running on city streets and other paved road terrain.

I usually have some level of knee pain after running more than a few miles, but that’s not the case with my Cloudflows! I just cannot say enough great things about this shoe. ‘
