ADIDAS 4DFWD Review

WHAT’S NEW

The new 4DFWD lattice is a totally redesigned 3D printed midsole that translates vertical impact from your down step into forward momentum, so you’re literally pushing yourself forward.

The midsole features a unique bowtie-shaped FWD cell which redirects energy from each step’s impact to create horizontal forward motion.

ADIDAS 4DFWD Review

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

The 4DFWD midsole provides runners with a super-lightweight premium upper that encases the foot in seamless sock-like fit.

Adidas uses historical mapping data to code the PRIMEKNIT upper to perfectly alight with the unique properties of the 4DFWD midsole. This mapping gives runners all the support and comfort they need while running.

ADIDAS 4DFWD Review

ADIDAS 4DFWD PROS

The midsole lattice construct is made of 39% bio-based 3D material which offers 23% more cushioning. This also generates over 3X as much forward motion when compared to previous generations of 4D midsoles.

The Primeknit+ upper is made from 50% recycled materials and no virgin polyester.

The rubber outsole is designed to work in harmony with the adidas 4DFWD midsole, providing superior traction for athletes.

The braking force experienced by the athlete during running is reduced on average by 15%as the midsole redirects these vertical impact forces into horizontal forward motion–delivering running economy comparable to that of Ultraboost midsoles in lab conditions.

ADIDAS 4DFWD CONS

This is a great shoe from adidas, but at a price point of $200 and a weight of 11.7 oz it’s a bit on the high end of it’s comparable counterparts.

ADIDAS ADIZERO BOSTON 10 REVIEW

Adidas Adizero Boston 10 Review

THE BUZZ

The Adidas Adizero Boston 10 is a maximally cushioned and very energetic neutral-oriented shoe that’s versatile enough be a high-mileage workhorse, long-interval performance-enhancing speedster or a reliable long-distance racing shoe.

A longtime favorite among marathoners, the Boston been completely overhauled and modernized since its previous edition with new materials and a much higher stack height, resulting in a livelier vibe and more cushioned ride.

Adidas Adizero Boston 10 Review

WHAT’S NEW

The Boston 10 now has a thick, two-part midsole comprised of a layer of responsive Lightstrike Pro foam on top of a layer of soft, durable, stable Lightstrike foam. (The previous version had a layer of Lightstrike foam on top of Boost foam.)

Sandwiched between those two layers of foam are a series of curved carbon-infused rods that Adidas debuted in its Adizero Adios Pro models. (It does not have the energetic carbon-fiber plate that the Adizero Adios Pro models have, so it doesn’t quite have the elite-level performance capabilities.)

A thin lightweight, two-layer upper system and revised outsole round out the complete reconfiguration of this popular model.

The new Adizero Boston 10 also features carbon-infused energy rods designed to deliver an anatomically driven transition that limits energy loss. Combined with the lighter, more energetic midsole foams, the rods provide a lively ride that make it ideal for up-tempo training, long training runs or long-distance racing.

A new, lightweight and minimally designed two-layer upper provides a snug, compliant fit that stretches slightly when the foot moves through the gait cycle. The inner engineered mesh combines a gusseted tongue and bootie construction that hugs the foot, while the outer micromesh layer adds subtle support and structure. There is a mild internal heel counter that adds a bit of structure, while suede overlays help reinforce the toe box.

Adidas Adizero Boston 10 Review

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

The Adizero Boston 10 fits true to size with a medium-narrow volume that translates to a semi-snug athletic fit for runners with medium or wide feet.

The step-in feel is cushy and comfortable, thanks to the interior bootie, padded heel, soft, gusseted tongue and premium footbed.

The first two things you’ll notice when you lace ‘em up are the extremely high midsole stack height and the very soft sensation in the heel.

The ride feels similar to a modern marathon racing shoe with the two compliant foams providing shock-absorbing cushioning and energetic bounce and a real sense of forward propulsion.

It’s not nearly as lively as the Adizero Adios Pro (or forthcoming Adizero Adios Pro 2), but it’s much, much more energetic (and a tad lighter) than the Adizero Boston 9.

 WHO IT’S BEST FOR

Runners who appreciate a lightweight, maximally cushioned shoe with a little jolt of bouncy energy will love the new Adizero Boston 10. It’s soft and cushy enough to run long, but light and peppy enough to run faster workouts like tempo runs and long intervals.

Runners who liked the low-to-the-ground feeling of the Adizero Boston 9 (or, for that matter, any previous version) might be a bit thrown off with the mega-cushioned vibe of this edition. But this version of the Boston represents a much-needed overhaul and appropriately puts it in the category of modern long-distance trainer/racer models.

Adidas Adizero Boston 10 Pros

PROS: ADIZERO BOSTON 10

It’s clear that Adidas is moving away from its iconic Boost midsole foam in its performance-oriented shoes. Although Boost foam has been staple of the Boston midsole for the past several years, it’s a very good change — one that runners will appreciate because the combination of Lightstrike and Lightstrike Pro foam provides a lighter, smoother and more resilient ride.

Some of the agile and electric vibe of the new Boston comes from the narrow overall footprint of the shoe. The outsole has small segments of rubber for durability, grip and stability, with a large, sculpted channel under the midfoot to keep the shoe as light and flexible as possible.

Although the Boston has been entirely revamped, it represents what modern racer/trainer models have come to be. The new Adizero Boston 10 has a similar composition and soft-but-supple feel to that of the Saucony Endorphin Speed and now-defunct Nike Pegasus Turbo 2. It’s lightweight and lively and can inspire quick-cadence stride turnover. The modern configuration returns the Boston to its place as a shoe that can go fast and long in training or on race day.

Adidas Adizero Boston 10 Cons

CONS: ADIZERO BOSTON 10

The vast changes, new materials and upscaled redesign of the new Adizero Boston have changed the price structure of this shoe forever. It used to be a moderately priced shoe ($120), but it’s now appropriately in that top-tier shoes that double as trainers and racers, which is why it’s competitively priced at $180.

ADIDAS ULTRABOOST 21 REVIEW

THE BUZZ

From its inception in 2015, the Adidas Ultraboost has been a maximally cushioned training shoe built on a thick, lively platform of extremely resilient Boost midsole cushioning. The Adidas Ultraboost 21 is the cushiest and most responsive version yet, serving up a springy ride that returns considerable energy in every stride.

Adidas Ultraboost 21 Review

WHAT’S NEW

The Ultraboost 21 has 6 percent more Boost foam in the midsole. It features an updated torsion system and rocker geometry that enhances forefoot stiffness by 15% for an even more responsive run.

In addition, the upper has been enhanced with a tighter and stiffer knit pattern to improve its fit and feel. The new, slightly wider overall footprint improves its stability and balance.

The compressive knit upper is made from a mesh material called PrimeKnit+, which contains 75 percent Primeblue yarns. It’s essentially a stretchy, full-bootie construction bolstered by a soft plastic exoskeleton cage. The cage wraps the saddle and an elf-like flare off the back of the heel to ease tension on the Achilles tendon.

Adidas has shown a huge commitment to sustainability with its marquee shoes. About 50 percent of the materials in the Ultraboost 21 are made from Primeblue yarn. This is a high-performance recycled material made from Parley Ocean Plastic recovered from the sea. Just as important, no virgin polyester was used in this shoe.

FIT, FEEL, RIDE

The Ultraboost 21 fits true to size with a medium-volume interior. It has a slightly more spacious heel and forefoot. This creates a locked-down feeling through the midfoot thanks to a soft plastic exoskeleton cage. This cage engages the Adidas “three stripes” logo and the lacing system. The step-in feeling is luxurious, both from the plus interior padding, the premium footbed and the soft maximally cushioned midsole that feels like a bed of bouncy rubber marshmallows.

That sensation is accentuated when you’re running. The thick cushioning in the heel reduces ground impact shock and starts the process of rolling the foot forward. Once the new torsion system under the arch is engaged, it creates a gentle but distinct rolling sensation of being propelled forward toward toe-off. Ultimately, the Ultraboost 21 is a slightly heavier, well-cushioned trainer with a comfortable upper, responsive midsole and vivacious ride.

Adidas Ultraboost 21 Review

WHO IT’S BEST FOR

The Ultraboost 21 is a soft, lively everyday trainer that provides long-haul comfort and consistent flow in every mile. It doesn’t have the pep for faster workouts or races, but it’s ideal choice for long runs, recovery runs and moderately fast tempo runs.

Runners who appreciate maximally cushioned neutral shoes with enormous energy return will really love the Ultraboost 21. Taller and bigger runners will appreciate the proficient shock-absorption in every stride. Smaller runners or runners who like to “feel” the ground might find the midsole to be excessively thick.

Adidas Ultraboost 21 Review

PROS: ADIDAS ULTRABOOST 21

Our wear-testing runs determined that the Ultraboost 21 seems to help improve the recovery process after a long run. Normally it takes several days to recover from a two-hour training run. However, our wear-testers reported having fresh legs just a day or two after logging a moderately paced 15-miler.

There is a new Linear Energy Push torsion system embedded in the bottom of the midsole. This is essentially a curvy hard plastic plate with a two-pronged design that stretches from the midfoot to the forefoot. This system adds notable stiffness that works in conjunction with the shoe’s rocker geometry and Boost foam to promote forward prolusion.

The outsole feature three types of rubber with soft, medium and hard densities that combine to provide optimal traction, durability and flex.

Interestingly, Ultraboost shoes have always had amazing street cred. This is thanks to celebs like Kanye West, Carrie Underwood, Kylie Jenner, Jessica Alba, Meghan Markle and Sarah Michelle Gellar wearing these kicks casually or with athleisure apparel. And let’s face it, there’s no other running shoes that look good with a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.

Adidas Ultraboost 21 Review

CONS: ADIDAS ULTRABOOST 21

The biggest drawback of the Ultraboost 21 from a running point of view is the weight. No matter how you slice it, 11.9 ounces (for a men’s size 9.0), is a pretty heavy load to carry through every stride, even with the amazing energy return.

For slower to medium-paced runs, it serves up a flowy ride but it’s a challenge to run faster speeds for very long.
