Gait Analysis- What is it and what’s in it for you?

A gait analysis is a free tool we use at Boulder Running Company to quickly and accurately determine which type and category of footwear will work best for you.  A gait analysis involves one of our fit fanatics recording your lower legs and feet while you run or walk on a treadmill at a comfortable pace for 30 seconds to one minute.  The camera is set up behind you, and upon playback in slow motion, we are able to analyze each stride to determine what your feet are doing upon initial ground contact, all the way through toe off into the next foot strike. A gait analysis takes a total of 30 minutes with a fit fanatic.


Several factors help us determine which footwear category will work best for you:

           -Initial Ground Contact – Typically, people either heel strike or midfoot strike, with the majority of runners and walkers heel striking.  A significant heel striker will likely have different requirements than a mid or even forefoot striker.

           -Arch Collapse – After initial ground contact, when your bodyweight is moving forward during propulsion, the arch of the foot will drop in as it reacts to your bodyweight during each step.  Depending on how much your arch collapses we will determine which type of footwear best fits you. 

           -Toe Off – The last step of the gait cycle occurs upon toe off, when your weight is transitioning forward as your opposite foot prepares to contact the ground as you take the next step.  Often, we see late stage overpronation here. In other words, we will see your arch collapse in excessively at the last stage of the gait cycle, which indicates that you may perform well in certain types of shoes that have stability in the forefoot area to address late stage overpronation.

Hoka One One Speedgoat Review

Hoka recently just updated the Rapa Nui, re-naming it the Speedgoat after the Speedgoat 50k and Karl Meltzer, ultra runner extraordinaire and Hokas first sponsored athlete. Along with the updated name, Hoka updated the Speedgoat making it fit and perform better than the previous version, making the Speedgoat an ideal option for your off-road racing and training. The Rapa Nui at the time was the first Hoka shoe that, while still maximally cushioned, was intended to be used as a lightweight trainer and racer, particularly for longer distance races. The Speedgoat takes the best features of the original Rapa Nui with a few enhancements.

We noticed with the launch of the Rapa Nui that it quickly became a shoe that people either loved or hated. People loved the weight reduction and trimmed down fit, or hated it because the outsole wasn't quite adequate for technical terrain, and felt much firmer than the traditional plush cushioning runners had become accustomed to from the brand. The Speedgoat, just like the Rapa Nui, is still composed of injection molded EVA, but in a much lighter and softer package. That's the first thing we noticed when putting it on, it's much softer feeling than before without being overly flexible or too cushioned.


The other improvement made to the Speedgoat is to the outsole, a great improvement in our opinion. The Rapa Nui outsole, while adequate, just didn't inspire enough confidence on very technical, slick conditions. The Speedgoat has been upgraded with a high traction, Vibram outsole with 5mm lugs, which is about double that of the Rapa Nui; a great improvement. Lastly, the speed laces have been replaced with regular laces, much easier to snug down and really tighten the Speedgoat down to your foot.

Roll Recovery R3- A new way to treat and prevent Plantar Fasciitis

The background behind the brand and Q&A with Jeremy Nelson, founder of Roll Recovery:

Based in Boulder, CO, Roll Recovery was founded on the idea that massage and recovery products for athletes could drastically be improved.  Dissatisfied with other recovery products on the market, Jeremy Nelson decided to come up with his own product that would suit the needs of runners, cyclists, and all endurance athletes at all levels.  Jeremy's mechanical engineering and product creation background lent itself well to creating something completely unique and different in the world of massage and recovery for products.  Luckily for Jeremy, his wife, professional marathoner and elite athlete Adriana was more than happy to add input, ideas, and feedback on the first few prototypes to dial in the design to what the R8 is today.  After sketching out several initial concept sketches and several prototypes, the final version of the R8 went into production in 2011 and was received with open arms in the endurance community.  Word quickly spread through the endurance sport hotbed community in Boulder, and both elite and everyday endurance athletes came into Boulder Running Company (where it was first launched in the specialty retail market) to get their hands on this innovative product.

Jeremy was kind enough answer a few questions about Roll Recovery, including how the brand got started:

Q1- What is the idea and concept behind Roll Recovery and the initial R8?

A1– “ROLL Recovery as a company started out as a way to launch the R8.  In 2011, I was running around 80 or 90 miles a week and trying to stay fast enough to pace Adriana in her workouts.  Because she's a professional runner, she would get a sports massage at least once a week, but I wasn't as fortunate.

I had a few thoughts on what I wanted to design and started building some prototypes in my garage.  I figured I'd put my background in mechanical engineering and product development to use and see what I can come up with.  After a few funny looking prototypes, one design emerged that would eventually evolve into the R8.

Adriana and I would show it to fellow runners and the feedback was great.  They wanted me to build them a prototype.  That's when we thought there may be an opportunity to launch it and build a company around it.  So to make a long story short, we put all of our money and time into developing the R8 and after about a year, launched ROLL Recovery in 2012 in Boulder, CO.”

Q2- How did you come up with the idea for the R3? Who can benefit from using it?

A2- “Traveling around the country to races and expos the past few years we learned how common plantar fasciitis is with runners and people in general. Designing the R3 was a very fun exploration in how feet work and how to help alleviate these conditions in a small compact product.

We acquired a 3D printer a little over a year ago with the intention of testing some of our designs.  For me, being a nerdy engineer at heart, working with a 3D printer was such a blast. We created several prototypes, collaborating with Physical Therapists and doctors in Boulder.  With so many professional runners on staff at ROLL Recovery, we are able to get instant feedback from an elite athlete perspective.  

After finalizing the functionality and engineering of the R3, we focused a lot on the aesthetics and packaging to make the R3 a beautiful product.  I truly hope it can help many people.”

Q3- Launching a new brand is pretty challenging, how did you initially get the word out about the product and get initial demand going?  

A3– “It is true, launching a new brand and spreading the word without a large budget is a massive challenge to say the least.  If a product is effective, the word will spread naturally, without requiring a marketing army. We literally had a zero marketing budget when we launched, so we relied heavily on our fellow runners to get the word out.  It was amazing to watch it spread to athletes, running groups and medical professionals.     

Relying solely on grassroots marketing requires a tremendous amount of effort, but I believe word-of-mouth is the most powerful marketing tool.  We were fortunate that the R8 gained so much publicity early on by being featured in Running Times, Runner's World, Competitor and was even selected as Gear of the Year in Men's Journal in 2013.  

Shortly after launching the R8, we humbly showed it to the Boulder Running Company to see what they thought.  We delivered 16 units, sat back and nervously waited to see how it went. I still remember getting the call at the end of the weekend, “Do you want the good news or the bad news? Everything sold and you better get over here now and deliver more.” What a relief that was!  

No matter what kind of growth we experience, we will never lose sight of who we are: a bunch of tired, beat-up runners at heart.”

Q4- In terms of actually using an R3- if I have plantar fasciitis, what is your recommended use to help alleviate some pain and get on the road to recovery?

A4– “A tight plantar fascia puts too much tension on the calcaneus and inflammation increases.  Part of relieving or preventing plantar fasciitis is simply stretching the plantar and all the intrinsic foot muscles on a consistent basis.

The R3 was designed to reach specific areas of the fascia to make this process easy.  It's non-symptrical shape is designed to reach the arch areas of the foot and hit those spots that typically get tight.  One great tip using the R3 is to stick it in the freezer, which will work great for cold compression. In addition to helping relive foot pain, the R3 can be used as a small body roller.

The R3 was designed to be compact, easy to use and travel with.  It is our hope that it will be a great solution for all those tired and sore feet out there!”

ASICS MetaRun- Premium, Limited Edition Performance Shoe

If running shoes were referred to as cars, the MetaRun by Asics would be considered the ultimate concept car.  With nearly three years in development, Asics teams of scientists, footwear designers, and developers were given no limits or restraints in terms of time or cost.  The only expectation that the teams had to meet was to produce the best performing running shoe every produced by the company with better than superior performance in terms of lightweight, stability, fit, and cushioning.   


Available November 27th in extremely limited quantities, the MetaRun will feature the best of the best in terms of Asics technology and performance.  With a price tag of $250, consumer expectation is justifiably high, and as a result Asics has done all but throw in the kitchen sink into MetaRun in terms of footwear technology advances, specifically in 5 key areas:

FlyteFoam-  The midsole foam used in MetaRun is known as FlyteFoam and it's very different from anything used by Asics in the past.  For starters, it weighs in 55% lighter than industry standard midsole materials, BUT also has more resilient properties which increases the level of cushioning.  Wearing it around and running a few miles on it, it is safe to say that it is one of the most comfortable shoes ever produced by Asics.  A key feature of FlyteFoam is built in organic fibers that act almost like memory foam in that the fibers instantly return the midsole to its original shape between each stride, meaning you'll get the same level of cushioning step after step for the life of the shoe. 

X-GEL- Two types of Gel cushioning were used in conjunction with FlyteFoam, built into the midsole.  One of the units is directly under the first metatarsal, while the second unit sits back underneath the heel, two high impact areas where added cushioning and protection is needed most. 

MetaClutch & Jacquard Mesh– To help create the best fitting, most comfortable upper ever created by Asics, an exoskeletal MetaClutch was utilized.  A MetaClutch external heel counter, with a built in memory foam lining wraps the lateral and medial side of the ankle bone, adding stability and providing a personalized fit thanks to the memory foam properties.  Additionally, a jacquard mesh was utilized in the upper itself further adding to the fit properties of MetaRun.  The mesh is a one layer, engineered mesh that minimizes friction and points of friction between the foot and the upper.  The result is a sock like fit, with minimal seams and hot spots.  The mesh combines closed and open weave patterns, that helps improve breathability and flexibility at a lighter weight than multi layered upper materials. 

AdaptTruss– If you've worn Asics footwear in the past, you've probably noticed a Trusstic device on the bottom of the outsole before.  The purpose of a Trusstic is to reinforce the medial stability of the entire midsole.  The AdaptTruss is a brand new take on Trusstic stability in that the AdaptTruss is reinforced with carbon fiber that adapts to each individual runner.  What this means is the impact of medial forces on the foot is reduced in that MetaRun flexes during footstrike, but if there's too much inward roll of the arch, the Truss becomes rigid to correct excessive overpronation. 

Sloped DuoMax– Dual Density posting in the midsole has been a staple way to provide support for years now.  While employing a “if it's not broke, don't fix it” approach, Asics also tweaked the firmer DuoMax material found in the midsole by sloping it, meaning it's precisely shaped and positioned to adjust to dynamic motion as the foot transitions from heel to toe.  What this means is that the DuoMax is sloped in such a way that the bulk of the firmer area of it is found toward the forefoot versus the heel. 


Compared to the Gel Kayano 22, a flagship premium cushioning and stability Asics model, MetaRun weighs in at 20 grams lighter, with 30% lower foam density (due to FlyteFoam's lightweight properties), and also has 28% greater stability thanks to the all new AdapTruss and Sloped DuoMax.  If you've ever felt like the Kayano, while cushioned, could certainly use more, MetaRun also boasts an 18% boost in rearfoot cushioning.  While offered in only one colorway for men and women (black and black), MetaRun is a pretty sharp looking shoe in person.  While Asics threw everything at MetaRun in terms of improved footwear technology, expect to see some of these innovations creeping slowly into the remaining footwear models of MetaRun in seasons to come.

On Cloudflyer- CloudTec Cushioning with Stability

On first got started in 2010 with an idea to improve running footwear technology as we know it.  Designed and developed in Switzerland, the three founders wanted to create a line of shoes that was unlike anything on the market today.  On's technology is different in that unlike other running shoes, the outsoles are created with rubber loops that are directly connected to the midsole.  These rubber loops, known as Clouds, compress as they absorb shock and initial impact upon footstrike, then spring that energy and shock back into the foot upon forefoot propulsion at takeoff.  These Clouds absorb shock, provide a soft yet cushioned landing where needed, and also give some inherent stability due to the low profile and platform.

The Cloudflyer is the latest in the brands' line, and is the most supportive and stable version yet.  The platform and base that it is built off of is wider, including the shape of the actual Clouds as well, meaning instead of the standard 13, there are now 12 Cloud loops but the difference is that these 12 are wider and are constructed with ultra soft yet resilient Zero-Gravity which also adds more stability, while improving the overall comfort of the shoe.  

On Cloudflyer- World Premier

– The Cloudflyer by On is the brands first release of slightly more stable, everyday trainer.  The Cloudflyer comes standard with 12 “cloud” rubber pods that are constructed at a slightly higher durometer (a measure of firmness), yet have a bouncy, resilient feel.

– Unlike other On models, the Cloudflyer is built on a wider plaform, meaning the CloudTec pods are build wider and slightly longer than other On models.  This results in improved stability and support, while still utilizing technology that cushions your landing, and springs forward upon takeoff.  

– A slight rocker profile further improves the heel to toe transition, and further adds to the overall responsive and bounce of the ride. 

– Lastly, a Speedboard directly attached to the outsole adds to the stable yet responsive ride, in conjunction with the wider, stable platform. 

On CloudTec Technology- What makes it different from other running shoes

– On was built on one simple principle- cushioned landing, firm takeoff.  This is accomplished by using up to 13, pod like, rubber loops on the outsole that compress during initial strike, absorb shock and become rigid, then return that energy back upon takeoff. 

– Upon initial ground contact, these rubber looped “clouds” absorb shock and cushion the body from both vertical and horizontal forces that result in a soft, smooth landing.  

– As your foot transitions from heel to toe, these same clouds lock together to provide a rigid foundation to create a powerful takeoff. 

– Ultimately what happens is you get cushioning and proctection in the areas of the foot that it need it most, however, that cushioning springs back for a firm takeoff during the heel to toe transition.

Top 5 Halloween Running Themed Costumes

Halloween is right around the corner, and with no shortage of Halloween 5k's and fun runs throughout the country, we put together our list of the top 5 most runnable Halloween costumes.  As you know, a costume that you can actually run in (comfortably at least) differs from regular Halloween costumes, and requires a higher degree of comfort, won't make you sweat too significantly once you get moving, and will allow more range of motion.  Will your running costume be as comfortable as your usual running gear?  Of course not, but as long as the race isn't really long, you won't even notice after a few minutes.  With that said, here's our top 5 choices for the most runnable Halloween costumers, in no particular order.

Steve Prefontaine:

One of America's most well known runners was the late, great Steve Prefontaine.  In his prime, he set American Records in almost every distance event ranging from the 2000 up to 10000 meters in the early 70's at the University of Oregon.  This may be one of the easiest Halloween costumes as all you'll need are shorts, a singlet, a mustache, and a wig.  Ideally you'll be able round up some gear in UO green and yellow colors to complete the look. 

The Flash:

This Justice League member keeps crime under control and saves the world by using his super power- freakishly fast, super human speed.  Another pretty straight forward costume to find online, or make your own using red and yellow colors with a few lightning bolts thrown in for good measure.  Who knows, with a bit of luck the Flash's super human speed will rub off on you in your future races!

Forrest Gump:

“Run Forrest, Run!”  One of the best movies from 1994, Tom Hanks stars as Forrest Gump who decided to do an epic cross country long run, inspiring legions of followers along the way.  His reason for such a long run?  He felt like it and didn't stop until he was done.  Needless to say along the way he developed an impressive beard and shaggy hair.  This costume is also a pretty easy one, just get dark baggy clothing, a fake beard, and a long wig.  Bonus points if you can find a “Bubba Gump” Shrimp Company hat to complete the look. 


Go to any Halloween 5k and you're sure to see at least one or two running Elvis's.  Elvis is a classic Halloween costume, and another really comfortable costume to run in as well.  A wig, sunglasses, and anything with rhinestones will do the trick, but make sure you stick to classic white, gold and silver colors to complete the look.  


Zombies may look sloth-like and slow, but they can really haul once they get moving.  If you've got a bunch of old running gear that you don't care about anymore, you can even make your own costume from clothing you already own.  You'll want to get plenty of fake blood, white and black makeup, and make sure to make your clothing look shredded and torn up to complete the look.

Sneak Peek- Garmin Forerunner 230, 235, and 630

Just in time for the holidays, Garmin is releasing three updated versions of it's most popular GPS watches, the Forerunner 230, Forerunner 235, and Forerunner 630.  With some pretty cool updated features, if you're a fan of Garmin looking to update your existing watch, here's the scoop on whats new in each watch.  We anticipate inventory becoming available for purchase late October to early November. 

Forerunner 230:

The 230 also comes standard with the option buy a chest strap based heart rate monitor (sold separately), but differs from the 225 in that it has GPS + GLONASS technology built in.  This advanced GPS stand for for Global Navigation Satellite System, and is a Russian satellite-based navigation system that works in conjunction with GPS technology o provide position information to compatible devices.   Essentially this means that the GPS information on your watch is more accurate.  Other key differences between the 225 and 230 include a longer battery life (12 hours), audio prompts, and a 44% bigger screen which is much easier to read on the run. 

Forerunner 235:

The primary difference between the 230 and 235 is that the 235 features wrist based heart rate monitoring, meaning there's no need for chest strap based heart rate monitor.  On the underside of the watch is a optical sensor which monitors all heart rate data, which is much more convenient than a traditional chest strap.  The screen size is also 44% larger than the 225, and also features audio prompts.  Just like the 230, it also features graphical heart rate zones, which are easier to read and understand on the run.  The 235 also comes standard with GLONASS GPS technology, making the GPS data more accurate.

Forerunner 630:

For runners seeking much more technical data including stride length, physiological measurements, and lactate threshold, the Forerunner 630 is for you.   The 630 has just about every advanced feature available on the market today and is ideal for runners wanting as much information about their training as they can possibly get.  The 630 has the capability to report on some really cool and interesting data about the user:

  • Stride Length- This will measure the length of each stride which correlates to pace.  You'll have to review it after your run, but this can be reviewed by logging into Garmin Connect.  Data recorded includes how stride length varies pace, cadence, and elevation. 
  • Lactate Threshold- Lactate Threshold refers to your body's ability to run at a given pace without getting into fatigue or oxygen debt.  Going at a pace faster than lactate threshold pace will get your body into oxygen debt and fatigue will quickly set in. For reasonably well trained athletes, lactate threshold occurs typically at approximately 90% of maximum heart rate or at a pace between 10k and half marathon pace.  Typically this information was only available by going into a lab and getting a test done, but the 630 provides this information on the watch itself, making it easy to monitor just how fast you should be running your tempo runs and faster paced interval work at.  
  • Performance Condition- Performance Condition analyzes pace, heart rate, and heart rate variability that provides a real time assessment of your ability.  It is given on a scale of -100 to +100 and can be thought of in terms of good day versus bad day effort.  In other words if Performance Condition gives you a score of +10, this indicates that you're feeling good, fit, and can anticipate feeling pretty strong on your run.  The best thing about this is that you can monitor it real time on the run as a data field.

Stability Shoes- Get the support you need to run your best

Stability Shoes- How much support is needed?

Lets face it, when looking to buy running shoes you've got no shortage of options to choose from in a variety of different categories and brands. Typically most shoes can be split into two major categories- neutral/cushioned, and stability/support. To help narrow down your options and help you decide which category to consider, we need to take into account several factors:
Stability/Support- How to know how much support is right for you:

Runners who should consider stability shoes typically have arches that pronate excessively with each step, and often have flat feet (little or no arch). Runners who have low arches typically over-pronate more than runners with higher arches, although this is not always true. The runner who over-pronates has arches that collapse as their body weight comes down, allowing their feet to roll to the inside (or medial side). To determine if this might be you, take a look at the wear pattern on the bottom of your current running shoes.

Over-pronators typically wear out the tread on the outer edge of the heel, and the tread near the ball of the foot. To prevent your feet from over-pronating, stability shoes feature midsoles with supportive features, usually a firmer area of EVA foam called a dual density post. The post is a usually a darker color, and works by reinforcing the medial side of the shoe, allowing the over-pronator to run with their feet and legs in proper alignment, minimizing the likelihood of injury.
