ADIDAS TAKES TO SPACE WITH BOOST

The drive for innovation has led humans to move heaven and earth in their quest to pioneer and revolutionize the human experience. Space has the ultimate story to tell in the human journey.  The quest for exploration beyond the earth presented exponential challenges that end up trickling down to the human experience on earth.

Bold steps taken in space have led to game-changing products we use every day: scratch-resistant lenses, artificial limbs, insulin pumps, home insulation, LASIK surgery and – important for runners – wireless headsets. Early innovations in running shoes were inspired by technology employed in the shock-absorbent rubber molding designed for astronauts’ helmets.

Move forward to 2020 and in a move to deliver an out-of-this-world experience, adidas are boldly partnering with the International Space Station National Lab to innovate literally beyond earth.  With 70 years of relentless innovation under their belts, the adidas ‘Future’ research and development team have set their goal to disrupt the norm with a move to an open-source culture of collaboration for innovation.

THE ISS NATIONAL LAB

The International Space Station National Laboratory orbits 408 kilometers above the surface of the earth and is the ultimate innovation creators lab.  It’s a true testament to science and global collaboration surpassing political borders, and what humans can achieve when we remove ourselves from earthly constraints.

This limitless potential is the era of exploration for adidas and their bold collaboration has the sole mission of empowering athletes here on earth. Sport is about pushing boundaries and pushing boundaries leads to game changing moments that inspire cultures and shape history.

ADIDAS BOOST IN SPACE: THE MISSION

It’s all about the science and adidas’ proprietary Boost midsole.

On a cargo mission contracted by NASA to deliver critical supplies to the ISS, a supply of adidas Boost midsole pellets will also make the journey.  In space, astronaut scientists will perform an experiment using the Boost midsole creation process, without the distraction of Earth’s gravity.

Purpose: To uncover the secrets of pellet movement during midsole mold filling under microgravity conditions – something that scientists theorize could be used to optimize footwear performance and comfort.

Procedure: The Boost pellets will be injected into a midsole cavity, and the motion of the pellets, their interactions, and their final orientation will be captured with a high-speed camera in the clear mold. The molds will be preserved and returned to Earth for inspection for the adidas research team to discover the future of Boost and understand what it takes to create truly out-of-this-world running technology.

We can only hope all the kids of the parents working at the adidas research and development team will quite possibly have the coolest science project ever to share at the next science fair.

ADIDAS ULTRABOOST 20

The new adidas UltraBoost 20 has arrived and with it a limited edition inspired by the adidas and ISS National Lab collaboration

Inspired by cosmic dust the iridescent shade of the midsole is a must-have for any space guru, sneaker head, or runner looking to be inspired from a little less gravity from way up high.

Aside from the space styling, the UltraBoost 20 will feature a new primeknit upper using the TFP technology for a dialed in fit that uses the least amount of materials. Adidas have worked hard on making the heel fit more securely and the style follows adidas’ commitment to sustainability with 70%of the upper made from recycled plastic from the ocean and 100% recycled polyester on the TFP application.

Check back to see the new cosmic-inspired adidas UltraBoost at JackRabbit and other new colors of the UltraBoost 20 coming early December.

There will be more news to come from the story of the adidas and ISS National Laboratory.  Watch this space!
