ASICS RUNNING: THE HISTORY OF “ANIMA SANA IN CORPORE SANO”

Asics Anima Sana In Corpore Sano

ASICS RUNNING: GLOBAL RUNNING PERFORMANCE

Take a step back to Japan in 1949 when Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan.

He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano”, which when translated expresses the ancient ideal of “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.”Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness.

ASICS GEL KAYANO 28 REVIEW

ASICS GEL Kayano 28 Review

THE BUZZ

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 28 is a premium, stability-enhancing, everyday trainer. It offers superior cushioning, plush interior comfort and a gender-specific ride.

Oozing both soft cushioning and reliable support, it’s the pinnacle training shoe in the ASICS line. It has been smartly enhanced with a smoother, softer ride over the past year.

ASICS GEL Kayano 28 - What's New

WHAT’S NEW

The new Kayano has been updated with:

  • A new midsole foam package
  • A new engineered mesh upper
  • Slightly different men’s and women’s specific geometries
  • Smaller structural components and more flex grooves in the outsole.

Despite those major changes, it still runs with the reliably stability of previous GEL Kayano models.

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

The GEL-Kayano 28 fits true to size with a medium interior volume that feels pretty spacious in the forefoot. The soft interior padding and new upper create a dynamic locked-down fit. This means it accommodates a wide range of foot shapes.

Reliable security comes from a more subtle internal heel counter. Add to that, there is a smaller plastic plate under the arch and a firm, lower-profile plastic external cradle and media-side support flange.

But what makes this new edition of the Kayano so special is the new FlyteFoam Blast midsole compound. This runs the length shoe directly under the foot.

That material helps give the multi-density midsole a soft, secure feeling in the heel and a fun, bouncy and energetic sensation as you roll forward to the toe-off phase.

Combined with additional flex grooves in the forefoot, the new Kayano serves up a much livelier ride than ever before without sacrificing stability that over-pronating runners need.

 WHO IT’S BEST FOR

New runners, fitness runners and marathoners who appreciate a soft, lively but stable ride with reliable medial-side support will love the new GEL-Kayano 28.

It has plenty of forgiving comfort for long runs and recovery runs, but it also has enough energetic pop for some moderately faster types of running.

 PROS AND CONS

ASICS GEL Kayano 28 - Pros

The layer of new FlyteFoam Blast cushioning (aka FF Blast) is made from a light, soft and responsive environmentally friendly blend of EVA foam. This provides an energetic sensation in every stride without inhibiting the shoe’s stability-enhancing mechanisms.

As with the previous editions of this model, the midsole cushioning system of the Kayano 28 is enhanced with silicone-based GEL cushioning pods. These are located in the heel and forefoot and reduce impact for a softer landing. They also enhance the toe-off experience at the start of a new stride.

The structural components of the GEL-Kayano 28 are all slimmer and more subtle than those in the previous edition of the shoe. This helps it become lighter and more agile and providing a smoother, more stable heel-to-toe transition while still providing support to offset over-pronation.

The GEL-Kayano 28 continues to be gender-differentiated to address men’s and women’s specific bio-mechanical movement patterns. Each version features unique heel-toe offsets and slightly lower midsole foam densities. Plus, the women’s model has a more compliant flex pattern.

The outsole has been updated with more flex grooves in the forefoot, smaller segments of high-abrasion rubber and a longer open channel under the arch. This starts in the heel and extends to the forefoot.

Combined with the springiness of the FlyteFoam Blast foam in the midsole, these features help give the Kayano a much more flexible, agile and performance-oriented sensation.

The new, two-layer engineered mesh upper is more ventilated and breathable than the previous edition and it helps wrap the foot with a dynamic fit. It expands and contracts slightly as the foot moves through the gait cycle, providing both comfort and support.

ASICS GEL Kayano 28 - Cons

If there’s any slight detraction to the Kayano 28 is that it’s not a speedy shoe.

Although it lost about a half ounce in weight and now has a springier foam in the midsole, it’s a shoe that’s all about comfort and stability. With that in mind, it is not as ideal for quick-cadence running.

SUSTAINABILITY AT ADIDAS

In 2015, adidas partnered with Parley for the Oceans to create the first ever running shoe made from recycled plastic waste. Fast forward to today, six years and more than 30 million pairs of recycled running shoes later and adidas is still making waves as the industry leader in sustainability.

Adidas works with Parley to spin problems into solutions by transforming ocean plastic it into high-performance sportswear. Parley Ocean Plastic™  is made from recycled waste that is intercepted from beaches and coastal communities before it reaches the ocean. Adidas uses it in product production as a replacement for virgin plastic in the adidas x Parley collection. After plastic trash is collected from coastlines, it’s baled and sent to Parley supply chain partners. There it’s shredded and reworked to become high-performance polyester yarn: Parley Ocean Plastic™, which is then used to create adidas x Parley products.

By 2024, adidas aims to have all shoes and clothing made with 100% recycled polyester so you can keep making sustainable choices without compromising performance OR the future of our planet.

ASICS NOVABLAST 2 REVIEW

THE BUZZ

The ASICS Novablast 2 is a neutral-oriented everyday training shoe that offers a comfortable fit and a soft, well-cushioned, lively ride.

It incorporates subtle but significant changes in the stability, fit, ride and look that build on the success of the original Novablast last year.

ASICS Novablast 2 Review

WHAT’S NEW

ASICS updated its next-generation FlyteFoam Blast cushioning material (now called FF Blast) found the original model to be slightly softer and more deformable to allow runners to experience a more bouncy and responsive sensation in every stride.

A new TPU heel stabilizer was added along both sides of the heel to help support the foot and create more stable, balanced strides, while additional foam under the forefoot improve the stability and responsive feeling of the new edition.

The double-jacquard woven mesh upper has been updated slightly from the original version, offering increased breathability and enhanced stretchiness in the forefoot. The trampoline-style responsiveness is created by open channel in the FF Blast midsole foam under the heel.

It creates a lateral decoupling effect that creates a secondary bounce effect that energizes the stride as the foot proceeds toward the toe-off phase.

The moderately wide footprint of the Novablast 2 creates a bit of inherent stability for runners who have a neutral gait, though it’s not a shoe recommended for overpronators.

More foam in the forefoot and the wider outsole, along with the new TPU support overlays at the rear of the shoe, have definitely made it more stable than the original version.

FIT, FEEL, RIDE

The Novablast has a classic ASICS fit, true to size length-wise with a medium volume interior. It serves up a secure, locked-down sensation in the heel and midfoot and has just enough space in the forefoot for toes to wiggle and splay.

It’s not excessively cushioned on the interior, but it provides plenty of softness from the padded tongue and heel and the premium footbed. The new upper material and gusseted tongue have improved the fit and feel from the original version.

The ride is very soft, bouncy and resilient, providing a noticeable amount of responsive “pop” in every stride. ASICS has built the shoe to allow the foot go through a “trampoline effect” and there is certainly a sensation of bouncy propulsion after the initial impact.

ASICS Novablast 2 Review

WHO IT’S BEST FOR

Runners who run with a heavy to moderate heel-striking gait and those who like cushy, shock-absorbing shoes will really appreciate the Novablast 2.

The maximal cushioning in the extended heel design engages the ground and start the process of absorbing the impact with the ground while helping the foot transition into the midstance phase of the stride.

It’s a great training shoe for slow, moderate and up-tempo running and short to long runs. Our wear-testers believe it it could serve as a fast trainer or a race-day shoe for mid-packers.

ASICS Novablast 2 Review

PROS: ASICS NOVABLAST 2

The Novablast 2 has a good cushioning to weight ratio, thanks to the featherweight and airy feeling of the FF Blast midsole foam. It is soft and compresses easily, but it’s not mushy or sloppy.

It’s responsive and rebounds quickly, delivering an energetic bounciness as the foot approaches the toe-off phase.  The outsole is almost identical to the original version of the shoe with sections of high-traction rubber around the perimeter of the shoe and another segment under the middle of the forefoot.

There are more extensive segmented flex grooves in the forefoot as well as new cuts through the front pads on the lateral and medial sides for improved grip. Overall, our wear-testers found the Novablast 2 to be a fun, energetic shoe to run in, one helped keep our legs feeling fresh during and after long training runs.

ASICS Novablast 2 Review

CONS: ASICS NOVABLAST 2

The Novablast 2 isn’t as light as some of its contemporaries and it actually gained about a half ounce from the first edition. It’s not a deal-breaker for most training runs, but it’s just not as light as some runners might prefer.

HEALTHY RECIPES FOR RUNNERS BY ELYSE KOPECKY

Healthy recipes for runners

Nutrition is a key part of any athlete’s playbook when it comes to training, performance and recovery.  Saucony athlete and nutritionist Elyse Kopecky has been serving up (pun intended) a cornucopia of recipes for runners and athletes that meet the demands of taste buds as well as the training load.

Elyse’s athletic background started as an elite collegiate cross country runner where she met her longtime running partner, friend and Olympian Shalane Flanagan. As her running career took her abroad, she attended cooking classes throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. Armed with amazing recipes from around the world, Elyse began cooking to fuel her athletic endeavors.

She discovered that by incorporating more fats into her diet, she was stronger, healthier, and happier than ever before. Inspired to share her message, she has authored two cookbooks with Shalane.

From her books Run Fast. Eat Slow and Run Fast. Cook Fast. Eat Slow, Elyse shares a selection of healthy recipes for runners to keep you fueled from breakfast through supper time for a power-packed training day.

ORIGINAL SUPERHERO MUFFINS

  • 2 cups almond meal
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (gluten-free if sensitive)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, optional
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1⁄2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1⁄2 cup raisins, chopped dates, or chocolate chips (optional)
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup grated zucchini (about 1 zucchini)
  • 1 cup grated carrots (about 2 carrots)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1⁄2 cup dark amber maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional

Position a rack in the center of the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Line a 12-cup standard muffin tin with paper muffin cups.

In a large bowl, combine the almond meal, oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, salt, and walnuts, raisins, dates, or chocolate chips (if using).

In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, zucchini, carrots, butter, maple syrup, and vanilla. Add to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. The batter will be thick.

Spoon the batter into the muffin cups, filling each to the brim.

Bake until the muffins are nicely browned on top and a tooth-pick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean, 25 to 35 minutes.

THAI QUINOA SALAD

  • 1 cup quinoa, rinsed and drained
  • 2 cups grated carrots (about 2 large)
  • 2 cups thinly sliced purple cabbage
  • 3 green onions, white and green parts sliced
  • 1 cup packed mint leaves, chopped (cilantro works too)
  • 1 cup packed basil leaves, chopped
  • 1 jalapeño or serrano pepper, seeds removed, minced (optional)
  • 1⁄2 cup roasted peanuts, chopped
DRESSING
  • 1⁄4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1⁄3 cup fresh lime juice (2 to 3 limes)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
  • 2 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup)
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce, optional

Here is a foolproof method to cook quinoa: In a medium saucepan over high heat, bring to a boil 11⁄2 cups water and the quinoa. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for 15 minutes or until all the water has been absorbed.

Transfer to a large salad bowl, fluff with a fork, and set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, put the olive oil, lime juice, soy sauce or tamari, honey, and fish sauce (if using) in a glass jar or bowl and stir to combine.

Once the quinoa is cool, add the carrots, cabbage, onion, mint, basil, and pepper (if using) to the bowl and toss to combine. Add the dressing and toss again. Taste and, if needed, add more fish sauce or soy sauce.

Top with the peanuts. Chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour or until ready to serve. 5 This salad will stay fresh in airtight glass containers in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Can't Beet Me Smoothie - Elyse Kopecky

CAN’T BEET ME SMOOTHIE

  • 1 steamed beet*, peeled and quartered
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 small frozen banana
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk or other milk of choice
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1-inch knob fresh ginger, peeled (use edge of a spoon)
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter

In a blender, place the beet, blueberries, banana, milk, coconut water, ginger, and almond butter.

Blend on high speed for several minutes until smooth.

For rushed mornings, this smoothie can be made the night before. Simply stir in the a.m. and sip while you lace up.

*QUICK STEAMED BEETS Cut unpeeled beets into quarters. Place in a steamer basket in a small pot and fill with just enough water to reach the bottom of the basket (to preserve nutrients you don’t want the beets simmering directly in the water). Cover and bring the water to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool, peel, and store in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Elyse Kopecky - Bison Burger

GREEK BISON BURGERS

  • 1 egg
  • 1⁄2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1⁄4 cup almond flour or almond meal
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh oregano leaves or 1 teaspoon dried
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 pound ground bison (buffalo) or ground beef, lamb, or turkey
  • 4 whole-wheat pitas or hamburger buns, optional (or serve on top of a salad)

Optional toppings: hummus or guacamole Preheat the grill to medium-high.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the egg, feta, almond flour or meal, oregano, garlic, salt, and pepper.

Add the meat and use your hands to combine, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Form into 4 equal-size patties about 1 inch thick.

Grill the burgers, flipping once, until a thermometer inserted in the center registers 160°F and the meat is no longer pink, 3 or 4 minutes per side.

In the last minute, warm the pitas or buns on the grill (if using).

SALOMON ULTRA-GLIDE REVIEW

THE BUZZ

The Salomon Ultra-Glide is a brand new maximally cushioned trail running shoe with a thick midsole platform that delivers a soft, smooth, rolling ride.

It’s geared for long-haul comfort for a wide range of runners, from newcomers to the trails to experienced mountain runners and veteran ultrarunners.

Salomon Ultra-Glide Review

WHAT’S NEW

The Ultra-Glide incorporates features of many of Salomon’s other successful trail shoes, but its most notable features are the new thick midsole cushioning that’s paired with a curvy rocker profile.

A sturdy, reinforced engineered mesh upper protects and secures the foot with a comfortable, wrap-like fit.  Salomon’s Quicklace system is the best single-pull lacing system in the business.

Once you slide your foot into the shoe, an easy tug on the Quicklace system pulls the Kevlar-enhanced laces equitably and secures the upper around the unique shape of your foot without any gaps or pinching.

It locks down the heel and saddle while giving the forefoot and toes the freedom of movement necessary for dynamic foot strikes on off-camber surfaces.

The flexible outsole is made from an updated version of Salomon’s multi-density Contragrip material that’s also found on its Sense Ride shoes.

It features an array of smallish 3-4mm directional soft and rigid lugs that provide good grip on hard rock, loose dirt and wooden steps with a reliably secure feeling no matter if the surface is wet or dry.

Our wear-testers loved the combination of fit, comfort, cushioning and protection the Ultra-Glide provides. It’s perhaps the most complete package of features Salomon has ever packed into one trail running shoe.

FIT, FEEL, RIDE

The Salomon Ultra-Glide fits true-to-size with a medium-volume interior. The semi-pliable upper, gusseted tongue and one-pull Quicklace system allow it to accommodate a wide range of foot shapes and provide a snug, locked-down fit, while a slightly more spacious toe box (especially compared to other Salomon trail shoes) gives plenty of room for the toes to wiggle, flex and splay.

The step-in feel is soft and modestly plush, highlighted by the extra padding in the tongue and heel collar. The special sauce of this shoe is the flowy, energetic rolling sensation the rocker geometry provides in every stride.

The ride is smooth, soft and consistent as it transitions from a shock-absorbing feeling at heel-strike to lively pop at the toe-off phase.

Salomon Ultra-Glide Review

WHO IT’S BEST FOR

Runners who appreciate a soft, max-cushioned ride on the trails will love the Ultra-Glide.

It’s not mushy soft like some thickly cushioned trail runners, and that gives it a runner slightly more intuitive feel for the trail for such a high-off-the-ground shoe.

It’s light enough to be fast, but it has enough structure to provide dependable, stable running on semi-technical trails.

If you like the high-stack feeling in a trail running shoe, you’ll love the Ultra-Glide as a trail racing shoe or as an everyday trainer.

Salomon Ultra-Glide Review

PROS: SALOMON ULTRA-GLIDE

The Ultra Glide features a super-soft Energy Surge midsole and a dramatically rocker profile that combine to serve up a smooth, rolling and responsive sensation in every stride.

Salomon footwear designers co-molded a piece of foam into the forefoot that, in combination with the outsole geometry, creates more ground filter and protection against rocks.

The engineered mesh upper is made from a soft, light breathable mesh that secures the foot and feels just as comfortable in motion as it does the moment the laces are secured.

It features subtly reinforcements that provide a touch of structure in the sidewalls for lateral stability and enhanced comfort. A durable toe cap offers forefoot protection against rocks, roots and other obstacles out on the trails.

The Ultra-Glide was created with an accommodating road running last that allow it to appeal to a wider range of runners, but it still fits snugly due to the Sensifit “wings” that extend through the sidewalls and the Salomon Quicklace system that provide the wrap-like feel.

Salomon Ultra-Glide Review

CONS: SALOMON ULTRA-GLIDE

Because of the chunky midsole cushioning, the Ultra-Glide gives off less of a proprioceptive feel for than the connective feeling most Salomon trail shoes are known for having.

If that’s not your jam, you might not like running in the Ultra-Glide.

HOKA ONE ONE CLIFTON 8 REVIEW

THE BUZZ

The HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 8 is a fast, cushy and comfortable maximally cushioned everyday trainer. The Clifton is the shoe that really started the max-cushion shoe revolution a decade ago and now the eighth version raises the bar to new levels.

Our wear-testers believe the HOKA Clifton 8 is the best version of the Clifton yet.

HOKA Clifton 8 Review

WHAT’S NEW

The Clifton 8 continues upon its past success, delivering an even softer, smoother ride than its predecessor.

A new, ultralight midsole foam, an updated engineered mesh upper, a revised outsole and a refined heel pull tab are some of the other highlights of this exceptional update.

The slightly updated engineered mesh upper is even more comfortable and secure than last year’s and equally as breathable. Plus, it provides better hold for a wider range of foot shapes and gait patterns.

The flat-waisted outsole is slightly wider than last year’s version, giving it a touch more inherent stability. There is a new hollowed out heel for a decoupling effect to smooth  the impacts of heel striking and there are new flex grooves that allow easier flexing during the second half of a stride.

Segments of rubber under the forefoot and heel for traction interspersed with exposed foam in between to keep the weight down.

The new midsole material is made from a new EVA foam compound that’s 15 percent lighter than the previous Clifton midsole.

It has a bit more pop than previous version, but it’s not exceptional springy or bouncy.

FIT, FEEL, RIDE

The fit of the Clifton 8 is true to size with a medium to slightly narrow interior volume and a new curled design at the heel tab that reduces pressure against the Achilles tendon. (The Clifton is also available in a secondary width for men and women, too.)

The step-in feel is plush and luxurious — a soft sensation feeling and smooth and comfortable wrapping sensation from the upper. That’s similar to the previous two editions of the Clifton, so if you liked those appreciate this edition as well.

What sets this version of the Clifton apart are the ride and the vibe. The softer, lighter midsole foam make this shoe feel faster and more nimble for all types of running.

It feels slightly more energetic than the previous versions of the Clifton, but the ride is all about soft, shock-absorbing comfort.

Hoka Clifton 8 Wall Picture

WHO IT’S BEST FOR

C’mon, who wouldn’t like the Clifton 8? Just as HOKA changed the game with the original Clifton, the eighth edition can be a game-changer for just about any runner.

It’s light and soft enough to run fast and long, but cushy enough to run slower over any distance. New runners, runners who appreciate soft cushioning or light shoes and competitive runners should all like this shoe for the comfort and agility it provides.

It could definitely be a race-day shoe for 10K to the half marathon (and maybe the marathon for runners who are strong and stable), but it really excels as an everyday trainer.

HOKA Clifton 8 Review Pros

PROS: HOKA CLIFTON 8

As with all HOKA shoes, the Clifton 8 features the brand’s early stage Meta-Rocker profile design. That feature produces a rolling sensation in every stride that both reduces the ground force impact and eases the foot’s transition to the toe-off phase.

The Clifton 8 is a vegan-certified shoe, which means it is made from 100 percent vegan materials.  The lightweight combination of softness, liveliness and comfort allow the Clifton to be a stunning everyday trainer.

It feels good running shorter or slower, but it feels exceptional when you bump up the pace for tempo runs or intervals. And most runners will enjoy this for longer runs between 10 and 20 miles.

HOKA Clifton 8 Review Cons

CONS: HOKA CLIFTON 8

There aren’t many knocks against the Clifton 8, but neutral runners who prefer or need more stability for longer runs might find it slightly less stable than they’d like.

NEW BALANCE FRESH FOAM MORE V3

New Balance Fresh Foam More v3

THE BUZZ

A premium maximally cushioned trainer, the neutral-oriented New Balance Fresh Foam More v3 is one of the softest and most comfortable running shoes available this season.

The Fresh Foam midsole serves up a marshmallowly soft, moderately energetic ride that absorbs shock, reduces impact and allows your feet to smoothly roll through the gait cycle from heel-strike to toe-off.

WHAT’S NEW

New Balance retooled this shoe to improve the fit, flexibility, feel and ride. Among the key upgrades are a new soft and supportive engineered mesh upper, a more curvy rocker profile, a firm interior heel counter and a wider overall platform for added stability.

New Balance really improved the fit of this shoe, and it all starts with the smooth, soft and slightly stretchy upper. The molded tongue, padded heel collar, improved heel counter and upgraded lacing eyelets all contribute to an accommodating and secure fit for a wide range of foot shapes and gait patterns.

There’s a unique outsole rubber pattern on the bottom of the shoe, but it’s a huge improvement from the previous edition of the Fresh Foam More. It has firm, stabilizing rubber around the perimeter of the outsole, with slightly more structure on the medial (interior) side to help offset over-pronation.

Small segments of strategically placed grippy rubber on the interior provide good traction on wet and dry surfaces, while a large section of exposed foam and lateral and horizonal flex grooves work in concern to smooth out the ride.

The updated rocker profile and added flexibility of the Fresh Foam More v3 have really improved the ride. The midsole/outsole chassis has a pronounced convex shape that creates a rolling sensation that helps guide your feet from touchdown to toe-off.

FIT, FEEL, RIDE

The New Balance Fresh Foam More v3 fits true to size with a medium interior and a slightly spacious forefoot. The step-in feeling is luxurious, akin to the comfiest bedroom slippers you’ve ever worn.

Once you lace these shoes up, you’ll feel a nice wrap-like sensation from the much-improved soft, stretchy engineered mesh upper.

Combined with the secure and well-padded heel support, you will feel in control of what will feel like oversized marshmallows strapped to your feet.

There’s very little “feel” for the ground, but that’s not what this shoe is about. This shoe is about maximum cush! The ride feels squishy soft, slightly bouncy, moderately flexible and yet surprisingly stable and consistent.

WHO IT’S BEST FOR

The Fresh Foam More v3 is for runners who appreciate and enjoy running in soft, well-cushioned shoes that offer some inherent stability. (For runners who like the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 shoes, you’ll find some fit and feel similarities and a lot more cush under your feet.)

It could be an everyday training shoe, but that depends on the runner. It’s great for consistent slow and moderate paces, but it lacks the giddy-up for up-tempo running (not nearly as much as the 1080s) and trying to run faster in it for long distances can feel fatiguing.

It’s not a race-day shoe unless your goal is aimed at finishing and not reaching a performance-oriented training goal.

PROS: NEW BALANCE FRESH FOAM MORE V3

The key element of this shoe is the Fresh Foam midsole compound. It’s the softest and most compliant foam New Balance has developed, but it also provides enhanced cushioning and a little stability via the large laser-engraved concave shapes and the convex cutaways in the medial and lateral sidewalls of the midsole.

The overall footprint of this shoe is impressively wide — one of the widest available in 2021. That generally creates a feeling of inherent stability for most runners, but it does limit the shoe’s agility a bit.

Overall the Fresh Foam More v3 feels more soft and stable than it does lively and bouncy. In other words, it’s more like a luxury SUV than a rev-ed up sports car. It has loads of plush comfort and a smooth, consistent ride, but lacks agility and energetic pop.

For comparison’s sake, the Fresh Foam More v3 might be what you would get if you mixed the HOKA One One Bondi 7 and the New Balance 1080v11 into cake batter and put it in the oven. The result is a sweet, tasty and soft shoe and the frosting on top is its long-haul comfort.

CONS: NEW BALANCE FRESH FOAM MORE V3

There’s not much to dislike if you like cushy shoes, but there is no way around that the Fresh Foam More v3 is a big, wide shoe with a lot of girth. If you prefer lighter, more agile shoes with more “feel” for the ground, this is not a shoe for you.
