Asics Running: Anima Sana in Corpore Sano

ASICS RUNNING: GLOBAL RUNNING PERFORMANCE

ASICS:  'ANIMA SANA IN CORPORE SANO'

Take a step back to Japan in 1949 when Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano”, which when translated expresses the ancient ideal of “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.”

Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness.

WELCOME TO THE US, ASICS

ASICS products were introduced to the United States in 1977 and brought with them an incredible story of athletic performance and technical advancements, a philosophy which still holds true today.

ASICS: ALWAYS LOOKING FORWARD

Committed to new technology, ASICS opened up an entire research center in Kobe, Japan in 1990.  The Research Institute of Sports Science is a unique spot where scientist, athletes and coaches work together in a location that can only be described as heaven for any athlete.

Imagine a 45,000 research facility with a all weather 350m running track, basketball and volleyball halls, test rooms and the technology to study and analyze human kinetics.  The goal is to create the best gear to enable both professional and regular athletes perform to the best of their abilities.

ASICS RUNNING SHOES: THE CLASSICS AND THE NEW

Asics is now one of the top performance running footwear brands  in the industry, and not without merit. For the past two decades the key Asics runnings shoes have firmly planted their feet (pun intended!) in the US runner’s market.

Awards for Asics shoes come fast and furious.  Their GEL system has pioneered a whole family of shoes that reduce shock making every step for a runner a comfortable and supported one.

HOKA CLIFTON 5 REVIEW

HOKA ONE ONE CLIFTON 5 – SHOE REVIEW

by MELANIE MITCHELL | JUNE 25TH, 2018

The Hoka Clifton 5 is the latest relase in the family of award-winning Clifton running shoes.  The new Clifton is light, cushy and contrary to those who critique, very fast!

The fifth version of the Hoka Clifton gets a significant upgrade to the upper, making it more breathable and more sleek looking than its predecessor.  Read on to learn what our Hoka gear tester thinks of the new version of her favorite running shoes.

THE BUZZ

This run tester has already drunk the Cool-Aid when it comes to the Hoka Clifton, wearing them loyally through versions 3 through 5.  Already sold on the concept of the Hoka One One brand of light, cushy shoe, the arrival of a new pair of Cliftons is the best summer can offer for this runner.

The designers at Hoka One One take any changes to their shoes seriously. There's a reason the Clifton has won numerous awards in the past including ‘Best of Tri Gear’ from Active.com in 2018 and ‘Best Update' from Runner’s World in 2017.  The fifth version of the Clifton is all about the upper – and that’s a good package for 2018.

WHAT'S NEW WITH HOKA CLIFTON 5?

The upper is the biggest change for this version of the Clifton. With brand new engineered mesh, there are fewer overlays than previous versions. This allows for the new Clifton to have a tighter lacing system, meaning you can dial in the shoe for a more supported run.  There is less padding on the tongue, which suited this run tester, again helping to add more cool to summer running and feeling more light as a result.

The midsole on the Clifton 5 remains unchanged in materials or firmness from the previous version.  It still has the Hoka’s EVA and Early Stage Meta-Rocker geometry for the classic Hoka ride.

The sole of the Clifton has strategically placed hi-abrasion rubber zones to reduce weight and add durability to the key areas of the sole where it takes the most abuse.

Nike Pegasus 35 - We Fly!

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

FIT: With the new style upper, the Hoka Clifton 5 feels ‘lighter’ from a temperature point of view. Removing the overlay was a bonus for this runner who has a ‘wider’ normal foot. Note, the Clifton is also available in a wide version.

FEEL: The lacing system on the new upper means the foot is better locked in and the pliable upper is more comfortable and for this run tester the area around the achilles felt more comfortable.

RIDE: With no changes to the midsole, the Clifton is like you’ve come back home and you’re running with your best friend – albeit a brand new version.  There is nothing like a new pair of running shoes, and the Clifton 5 is no exception. With the new upper (and I am testing it in the summer), my legs just got an upgrade, and my feet feel five years faster!

WHO'S IT BEST FOR?

Good for daily training runs where you need a maximal shoe for impact absorption on hard surfaces, which the Clifton 5 provides in spades.

Although some say the Clifton is suited to moderate paced miles and recovery runs, I agree and disagree. The Clifton 5 works best for this triathlete at tempo paces and long runs when I am already running on tired legs. If you’re a high-mileage runner, or looking to bulk up your distance as the season progresses, both will benefit from adding the Clifton to your shoe rotation.

PROS AND CONS OF THE HOKA CLIFTON 5

Hoka One One Clifton 5 Pros

More breathability thanks to the mesh upper and more comfort. No changes to the midsole or sole, which is perfect given the accolades garnered from the last upgrades in the fourth version. If it’s not broken….. don’t fix it!

Hoka One One Clifton 5 Cons

If you’re looking for a con, the question to ask yourself is whether a max-cushioned shoe is right for you.  If you’re a runner used to a less cushioned shoe, the Clifton will feel different, and change is scary to many of us! However, go for a few runs and we think you’ll drink the Clifton Cool-Aid with us.

On CloudAce – Staff Review

ON CLOUDACE – STAFF REVIEW

by Emily Walsh  | June 19th, 2018

THE BUZZ

Superior cushioning doesn’t have to mean slow. That’s the genius of the new Cloudace. This new running shoe from On has every single element engineered for ultimate comfort and support. No innovation held back. Zero compromises. This is a shoe you can run the world in.

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT THE CLOUDACE

Upper: No-sew tape ensures midfoot stability while evenly distributing pressure throughout the foot. It also features a technical mesh designed to vent the forefoot and provide stability where it’s needed.

Speedboard: An extra-wide speedboard stabilizes the foot throughout each phase of the run motion while also propelling push-off. You can feel the support and the propulsion with every step.

Sockliner: Ultra light dual-density sockliner made from high-resilient compression EVA and adaptive memory foam. This has to be the coolest upgrade with this new shoe. It’s unlike any running shoe you’ve ever put on your foot.

Outsole: Ultrasoft landing zone thanks to the Zero-Gravity heel Clouds, combined with a powerful push-off thanks to the rubber forefoot Clouds. The midfoot is also supported by a natural transition zone designed to evenly distribute pressure.

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

Fit. The Cloudace is the real “ace” up your runner’s sleeve. From the moment you put it on, your foot feels locked in, comfortably supported and ready to rock and roll. Because these shoes are so premium, it takes a few runs to break them in. But once you do, they’re everything you could ever want from a stability running shoe. Even if you’re not a true “stability runner,” the Cloudace is an awesome lightweight option for a shoe with great overall comfort and support.

Feel: No innovation held back here. The Cloudace feels like a premium running shoe from the first moment you put it on. Similar to a high-end Italian leather boots that even though may feel stiff with the first few steps, fit and feel better and better the more you wear them.

Ride: Two words. Cushion and support. Like, whoa these babies are comfy! Not only do they take you far and fast on runs, they’re also great for weekend off-roading adventures too. Would I run a steep uphill trail race in them? Maybe not. But they’re definitely a killer choice for kicking around the Colorado Rockies in the summertime. The Couldace is all about premium movement and overall support. If you know you’re going to be on your feet all day, these are the shoes you want and need.

WHO'S IT BEST FOR

Runners who need protection, comfort and speed. Like I said, this shoe is the bee’s knees when it comes to premium stability.

PROS AND CONS OF THE ON CLOUDACE

– It feels like a premium running shoe from the first moment you put it on.
– The step-in feel is amazing.
– Extra plush insole that compliments the TPU molded heel counter for a custom fit and feel.

-Slightly stiff on the first run.
– Pro tip: Wear a thicker sock to break them in like the Balega Blister Resist No Show Socks or Feetures Elite Max Cushion No Show Tab Socks.

CLOUDACE TEST RUN

The new Cloudace will be tested to the max in the world's longest relay run on the longest day of the year, June 21st. ASICS GEL KAYANO 25 REVIEW

ASICS GEL KAYANO 25 – SHOE REVIEW

byBRIAN METZLER| May 18th, 2018

Twenty five years of the Asics Gel Kayano is testament to the solid place in running history for this solid training shoe from one of the leaders in running.  Our guest reviewer Brian Metzler, takes a run in the latest release and shares his thoughts on the Asics Gel Kayano 25.

THE BUZZ

The Gel-Kayano is one of running’s all-time shoes, the go-to everyday training shoe of a generation of runners.

The celebratory silver-anniversary edition retains the smooth-riding, max stability demeanor and plush interior feel of previous models, but it also gets some welcomed, next-level enhancements.

WHAT'S NEW WITH ASICS GEL KAYANO 25

The most obvious new feature of the 25th edition of the Kayano is the vastly updated engineered upper that offers a fast and clean appearance while functionally enhancing the fit and ride of the shoe.

The all-way stretch Jacquard mesh is very breathable and adapts to a foot’s specific shape and movements while also adding to the shoe’s lateral and medial support. The most dominant new update to the shoe is the firm external heel counter that wraps the rear of the foot for a locked-down snugness that anchors the foot to the shoe throughout the gait cycle.

Nike Pegasus 35 - We Fly!

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

The new heel-clutching system, improved upper and slightly wider toe box allow this version of the Kayano to fit a wider range of foot shapes than previous editions. The padded heel collar, soft, thick tongue, seamless interior and extra-cushy sock liner make this one of the comfiest pair of long-distance kicks you’ll ever find. In short, the Kayano rides like a luxury SUV, not a sports car—but that’s a very good thing.

What the Kayano lacks in agility, it more than makes up for in reliable stability. Thanks to the reinforced undercarriage and heel, the ride is unflinchingly stable but the three-layer midsole make it consistently smooth, too. Although it feels almost underwhelming at first, once you settle into a groove of a long run you’ll feel the subtle softness and long-wearing comfort mile after mile.

WHO'S IT BEST FOR

Stability-seeking runners looking for a durable everyday training shoe will love this shoe. It’s one of the most stable high-mileage shoes available, but it also rides quite well and is chock full of creature comforts.

PROS AND CONS OF THE ASICS GEL KAYANO

Nike Pegasus 35 Pros

The combination of an absorbent, high-impact foam and a lightweight, super-responsive foam sandwiched around packets of GEL in the lateral heel and midfoot give the Asics Kayano 25 the ultimate balance between comfortable cushioning and energetic responsiveness as it rolls through each stride.

Nike Pegasus 35 Cons

The Kayano 25 is about a half-ounce heavier than the Kayano 24 and a tad hefty compared to other everyday stability trainers on the market. It isn’t adept at running short, fast races or up-tempo workouts, but that’s perfectly OK given its long-haul comfort and smooth-riding consistency.
