So, while it might be frosty outside, warm up your spirits with these new releases.

Have a question about a new version you don’t see answered? Be sure to drop us a line in the comments!

DECEMBER 1st RELEASES

NEW BALANCE 1080v8

New Balance 1080v8

The plush cushion from the New Balance 1080v8 is road running perfection. Building off of the success of the ultra-comfortable 1080v7, the 8th version of the popular 1080 updates both the upper and outsole. The upper is now made with engineered mesh and no-sew materials, making it more breathable and streamlined. The outsole, comes with re-configured flex grooves to improve traction and durability. The midsole moves from a convex pattern to concave geometric patterning on the outside, providing a softer landing in addition to a smoother ride. The New Balance 1080v8 still offers the Fresh Foam cushioning with the goal of keeping your foot comfortable and your stride light.

NIKE VOMERO 13

Nike Vomero 13

The soft and durable Nike Vomero you love is back with the 13th edition. Plush comfort is paired with a circular-knit upper that gives your foot a lockdown feel and lightweight ventilation, while giving the shoe a more streamlined look. Updated foam crash rail on the lateral side of the shoe acts as a cushioning device, for a smooth and soft transition with every step. A pressure-mapped outsole provides great cushioning, while encouraging an efficient stride through toe-off, keeping your feet happy mile after mile.

ASICS GT-2000 6

Asics GT-2000 6

One of the most popular shoes around, the Asics GT-2000 improves on what has made it so reliable, with the 6th edition. Now using lighter and more streamlined materials, the FluidRide midsole has been replaced with FlyteFoam to shed weight and provide more resiliency. The upper is now entirely seamless: Fewer overlays and no external plastic on the heel create a consistent and snug feel throughout the entire shoe. Ventilation along the inside of the midfoot gives extra breathability without detracting from the overall supportive feel. The Duomax support system and Guidance Trusstic System have been retooled for a smoother transition from heel to toe, making this new version the most fluid yet. Experience the new Ortholite sockliner inside the shoe today at your local JackRabbit running store!

ADIDAS ULTRABOOST 4.0

Adidas UltraBOOST 4.0

The hottest shoe is here in its newest iteration. With a new, updated Primeknit pattern on the upper, the locked-down comfort fit you love just got better. Still packed with reliable Boost cushioning under your foot, the energy-returning power, yet soft sock-like feel, of the Adidas UltraBOOST 4.0 is present wherever you go.

DECEMBER 8th RELEASES

ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 20

Asics Gel-Nimbus 20

After 20 years, the Asics Gel-Nimbus continues to offer unparalleled and luxurious cushion. Lighter than the previous model, the gradient jacquard-mesh FluidFit opens the upper for a nice, spacious fit, while 3D-printed overlays keep you supported every mile. A snug fit on the heel collar keeps you secure while you bound along. The Gel-Nimbus 20 retains the same great rearfoot and forefoot Gel Technology Cushioning Systems of previous models. The impeccable bounce back of a FlyteFoam midsole, and a durable outsole, make your Nimbus 20 shoes long lasting.

ALTRA SUPERIOR 3.5

Altra Superior 3.5

The Altra Superior 3.5 is the new and improved model from the popular 3.0 version. Once again, Altra has made a great trail shoe that keeps the essentials intact while providing a shoe made for the modern trail runner. Still present is the StoneGuard that can be removed or added, depending on your needs. The DuraTread outsole continues to give you great protection from the terrain and is durable for many trails. The upper has been refined and updated to make it more durable, keeping up with the trail-dominating style this shoe is known for.

NOVEMBER RELEASES

MIZUNO WAVE RIDER 21

Mizuno Wave Rider 21

The Mizuno Wave Rider is now more breathable and comfortable than ever. A breakthrough engineered mesh gives you the movement, fit and hold that you need. A softer heel counter and a premium sockliner provide a better step-in feel.

SAUCONY TRIUMPH ISO 4

Saucony Triumph ISO 4

The Saucony Triumph now has a full-length EVERUN midsole to give you the comfort and flexibility you deserve from a great shoe. It retains the 8mm heel-to-toe offset, but overall 2mm less stack, putting your foot closer to the ground. The EVERUN midsole provides more return with less bulk, compared to previous models and other shoes with an EVA midsole. The engineered mesh on the upper adds to the dynamic and open feel, helping your foot spread out and soar on the road, or wherever you go.

BROOKS ADRENALINE GTS 18

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 18

The Brooks Adrenaline GTS lives up to its Go-To-Shoe name with the new 18 model. The new engineered mesh upper gives you a supportive fit with a streamlined look, while softer cushioning and increased flexibility help your foot do what it does best. Stability provided by the Progressive Diagonal Rollbar (PDRB) keeps you aligned every mile.

ON CLOUD (2018)

On Cloud (2018)

Comfort with clouds are in the forecast. The new On Cloud is as comfortable as ever but now has new features to propel you forward on your run. The On Speedboard extends all the way to the back of the shoe to transfer energy completely, while the “central channel” between the rows of clouds on the outsole has been widened and given an upside-down “Y” shape, improving durability and keeping out debris. The upper is now a single smooth layer, giving you more support and a cleaner look.

SAUCONY GUIDE ISO

Saucony Guide ISO

With updates to an already stellar shoe, the Saucony Guide ISO expands on what has made this line a staple shoe. It now has the ISOFIT lacing system for a dynamic and supportive fit, giving you full movement with a lock-down feel. Improved flexibility and comfort are the new norms, and the Guide ISO delivers by continuing the 3mm EVERUN in the topsole. Additionally, a triFlex outsole in the forefoot gives you more flexibility on toe-off.

ON CLOUD 2018: SHOE REVIEW

FIRST LOOK: THE NEW ON CLOUD 2018

NOW AVAILABLE

“The Cloud is a hidden performer. It turns out to be an astonishingly fast and flexible running shoe that I now use regularly in my running training and in all races.”– Nicola Spirig, 2012 Olympic and 2015 European Games Women’s Triathlon Champion

The 2018 Cloud from On Running is an all-around running shoe that works well for road, speedwork, track, triathlon and weighs in as light as a feather – or a cloud. The new 2018 On Cloud keeps the same light approach in both weight and feel.

PERFORM ALL DAY, EVERY DAY IN THE ON CLOUD

What’s new with the new On Cloud 2018?

Of course the mainstay of the shoe remains consistent and rightly so. The lightness, the style and the ‘clouds’ on the bottom of the sole are the reasons why people fell in love with the On Cloud in the first place.

As well as adding some new colors to the On Cloud running rainbow, the On Running crew have made improvements and enhancements to the 2018 version of their signature running shoe.

NEW FEATURES OF THE 2018 ON CLOUD

  • Grip Pads: The grip pads on the heel and forefoot have increased size and number for better control in variable conditions (think rain!) and for better durability.
  • Smooth Upper: You might think it is impossible for an On shoe to be smoother, but it can be. The upper of the shoe is now a single smoother layer for support and a cleaner look to the shoe.
  • High Viz: More reflective logos have been added to the 2018 style for safety and styling.
  • Sole: The central channel of the sole is a little wider to avoid snagging small rocks in there. Those rocks will remain right where they should – on the ground.
  • Secure Fit: A new sock-liner has been added for a secure fit and sock like feel.

JACKRABBIT PAT RUNS IN THE ON CLOUD

Athlete Pat: Meet Patrick, a former collegiate 1500m and cross country runner and current marathon runner as well as being part of the digital team here at JackRabbit. His goal for 2018? A PR in the New York Marathon.

‘I had the opportunity to wear-test On’s newest version of their flagship shoe – the Cloud – for about a month.  This was my first pair of On shoes, and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but based on other reviews I had high hopes for a shoe that would hold up over long miles and keep me feeling fresh throughout my runs.

The Clouds were a great fit for my foot.  I have a high arch, with a bit of a narrower forefoot, and these shoes did a great job of hugging my foot from heel to toes without feeling too narrow or constricting.  The lacing system locks down my foot without having to tie my shoes too tight.

Taking the road and getting my run on, the Clouds gave me a much different feel than expected.  They offered a firm and responsive ride, but not the type of soft cushioning I had been expecting.  The flexibility in the forefoot gave me the feeling that I could up my pace at any time.  And there’s nothing wrong about that! While the cushioning was a bit firmer, I did feel that the shoes held up great over my higher mileage runs throughout the month.

All in all, the On Clouds were a fun, responsive change to my running routine. Try them out and see for yourself!’

FEATURES OF THE 2018 ON CLOUD

  • Runner Type: For neutral runners
  • Colors: A rainbow of colors available for both men and women
  • Weight: Men’s On Cloud 2018 – 8.1 ounces
  • Weight: Women’s On Cloud 2018 – 6.4 ounces
  • Drop: Men’s and Women’s 6mm
  • Price: $130.00

WHEN SPORTS SUPPLEMENTS MATTER – Gels, Chews, and Bars

WHEN SPORTS SUPPLEMENTS MATTER – Gels, Chews, and Bars

Q: Why Do We Need Sport Supplements?

A: The faster you run, the more you need replenishment of carbohydrates.

Proper sports nutrition matters. Your body uses two primary sources of fuel to feed the muscles when you’re running – fat and carbohydrates. Fat is an abundant resource, that slowly breaks down into useable energy, typically over long periods of time, and at low intensities – such as walking. When we’re running at higher intensities, our body demands energy quickly, preferring to use readily-available carbohydrates stored in your muscles as glycogen. Therefore, carbohydrates are your number one fuel source during a race. As a general rule the faster you run, the more your fuel will come from carbohydrates.

Sadly, we can only store enough carbs for about 90 minutes of running at half marathon pace and about 2 hours when running at marathon pace. That is why we need to be consuming fuel as we are running. When glycogen is digested, it goes through the intestinal wall and is absorbed by the muscles. Although sports supplements won’t inject glycogen directly into your muscles, these quick carbohydrates will make you feel more invigorated. This “second wind” feeling comes from your body having more readily digestible and useable energy in the bloodstream.

Q: How often should you use Energy Gels, Chews or Bars?

A: At least once every hour.

If you are running beyond 75 minutes, do not wait until you are already tired or hungry. By that time, your stomach will have already shut down and it will be tough to recover. The goal is to take in 45-90 grams of carbohydrates per hour of running, and take in some sort of energy supplement at least every 30 minutes. Start taking in fuel after 30 minutes of hitting the pavement and ingest a little more every 30 minutes. The idea is to keep your energy level steady and stop fatigue and hunger before it stops you. You do not want to intake more than one full gel every 45-60 minutes. Consider alternating between caffeine and non-caffeine energy gels too to ensure you don’t take in too much caffeine.

Should I take an energy supplement BEFORE a race? – Physiologically it is fine, but look for sources with low sugar contents to minimize a crash later on.

Q: What liquids should I consume?

A: Always-Be-Drinking-Water, sports drinks have too much sugar.

Be sure to wash down those carbs with a sip of water. Do not chase an energy gel, chew, or any carb-heavy fuel with sports drinks, which have carbs and sugars, too. Too many carbs into your gut at one time will send you dashing for the nearest toilet, and these simple sugars will be absorbed first into your blood stream as glucose, which will give you a sugar-high stomachache.

Q: What Energy Supplement should I use?

A: The most important part is to like what you are taking.

Don’t get oversold at the supplement store. The best supplements for you are the ones you respond best to. As you try out new nutritional supplements during your training runs, keep track of what you took and how you felt afterward. Did you get a burst of energy or feel sluggish? Did you hit a wall? Did your stomach get upset?

Each product has its own unique blend of sugar and other ingredients, so try several different flavors and brands, to determine which product gives you a boost without upsetting your stomach. It’s possible that your stomach shutdown during the latter half of the race, so try eating only a small portion of the gel, but in quicker intervals. For example, eat 1/4 of the packet every 20 minutes. If you’re training for a race, try the brand that will be offered at aid stations at the race to determine if that works for you.

  • – Energy chews: Bite-size with about five grams of carbs per chew
  • – Energy gel: Approximately 25g of carbohydrates = 45 minutes of running but taking two at a time doesn’t mean you’ll have 90 minutes of running, instead you’re likely to crash as your body attempts to process the sugar
  • – Energy bar: 22 to 50 grams of carbs, plus some electrolytes and protein

Supplement ingredients to look for that help boost performance:

  • – Electrolytes: Replace lost minerals
  • – Caffiene: Open up your blood vessels, speeding up the delivery of nutrients and giving your mind and motivation a little boost too
  • – Flavors: Can come from super-food sources like berries which are rich in antioxidants to help clear the muscles of waste products

GIFTS FOR RUNNERS 2017: JackRabbit Essentials

BRINGING THE ESSENTIALS BACK TO RUNNING

Yes there is the glory of running – the start lines, the finish lines, even the Olympics if you’re really on the edge of your talent. But most of all, a runner’s life is about putting the work in; being a workhorse. The everyday becomes the every day if you have a running goal in mind.

We all need the essentials to power our runs and our training. Read on for the JackRabbit recommendations for every runner’s needs.

SOCKS AND FOOT SUPPORT GALORE

No longer are socks the gift you give if you can’t think of what to give your favorite troublesome gift receiver. Sock styling has been taken to a whole new level with the threadmasters at Stance, Superfeet and Feetures.

And for those with special feet needing some extra loving, insoles are a game changer for your plantars.

RUNNING GADGETS

While you may want to believe all you need to run is a pair of shoes and the motivation to step out your own front door, we all know there is a whole cornucopia of things you need to make your run life a little more rounded!

Headlamps show you the way (literally), and hydration is key if your runner trains for longer than an hour. (Aside, did you know exercise performance is impaired when an individual is dehydrated by as little as 2% of body weight.) So gift wisely, and get a water carrier for your running bff.

If your favorite runner wants to run tomorrow following running today, then they’d better be taking care of their legs. A daily once over from the R8 roller or their preferred foam roller and their legs will thank you in the long run (pun intended).

We hope you have some XXXL stockings hanging from the fireplace this year.

From nutrition gels and bars, more socks (you can’t have enough, friends!), race belts, body glide, sunscreen and more. Shop around our curated selections just for you.

5 WAYS INSOLES HEAL YOUR PAIN: From Shin Splints to Plantar Fasciitis

5 WAYS INSOLES HEAL YOUR PAIN:
From Shin Splints to Plantar Fasciitis

1. Prevent Plantar Fasciitis

About 15% of all running injuries strike the foot. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common of all foot ailments. The condition occurs when a band of tissue on the bottom of the foot is strained and inflamed, and it results in pain in the heel. If you have plantar fasciitis symptoms, insoles for running shoes help reduce strain to the Plantar Fascia tissue by providing proper cushioning and arch support.

2. Reduce Knee Injuries and Ankle Injuries

Insoles stabilize your feet to reduce strain around soft tissues in the ankle.

3. Prevent Shin Splints

Constantly hitting hard surfaces causes one of the worst running injuries – Shin splints. These can cause serious additional injuries, plus delay getting back to regular workouts. Insoles properly cushion each foot strike, providing you with an excellent shin splints treatment.

4. Prevent Metatarsalgia and Metatarsal Fractures
Insoles reduce the shock and stress placed on metatarsal bones in the foot, preventing this common runner’s injury.

5. Assist with Overpronation

Insoles are essential for fallen arches and flat feet to prevent shin splints, bunions, a sprained ankle and other problems, by providing a stable and cushioned arch support.

THE SHOE SECRET ALL RUNNERS KNOW

You now know the benefits of insoles, but we want to make sure you know the importance of replacing them every 6-9 months, because wearing worn-out insoles can cause heel, foot, and back pain as well as long-term tissue damage, so now the reason for wearing them is pointless or potentially dangerous.

So right now – go grab your shoes.

Take out your insoles and look for and wear and tear. If you see things like cracks in the shell of top toss them in the trash. They’re no good anymore—potentially even dangerous. It is time to update your insoles with the newest tech and design.

Swapping Out Your Insoles

HOW TO PUT IN YOUR NEW INSOLES

  • 1. Take out your old insole from your shoe
  • 2. Put your old insole on top of your new one
  • 3. Trace the outline of the old insole on your new one
  • 4. Cut the extra pieces of the new insole
  • 5. Stick the new insole into the shoe, toe first, push down the heel so the new insole lays flat. If the insole is not laying down flat in the shoe, you will need to see where it is not fitting by feeling around the outsides of the insole and cut of extra pieces.

PRO TIP: To make insoles last longer, take out insoles every time you are done using them to let the insoles breathe.

Enjoy a comfortable run!

ON CLOUD X: MEN’S REVIEW

ON CLOUD X – FIRST LOOK: MEN’S REVIEW

AVAILABLE NOVEMBER 2nd 2017

Given that On just released a running shoe for those of you that might not identify as runners, we had two of our own fitness fanatics kick around the rubber and provide their thoughts. Men’s review below. Women’s review located here.

I’M NOT A RUNNER, I JUST CRUSH A LOT

I am not a runner. Odd, given that I make a living writing running shoe reviews.

Please don’t misunderstand, I do run. I sprint, I jump, and given enough caffeine, I sometimes briefly fly. Running, and movement that resembles running, are absolutely an integral part of my lifestyle. However, I would never brand myself with the title of “runner”.

I have friends that race for Team USA, are competitive Ironmen, or complete multiple marathons per year. They are runners. I’m just a dude who sometimes incorporates running as part of an active and healthy lifestyle. So when I heard that one of my favorite running shoe brands, On, was coming out with a running shoe for non runners, I was highly intrigued. On running shoes, born of flawless Swiss engineering, are known for being designed for athletes who move in a wide variety of ways.

Lifting in On

THE RUNNING SHOE FOR NON-RUNNERS

According to a completely non-official survey I didn’t actually conduct, the vast majority of people who run don’t only run. I imagine a great number of you out there wouldn’t put yourself in the “runner” category, because you try a number of fitness experiences and different ways to move.

For that reason, On has remixed the running experience by creating athletic footwear such as the Cloud X. The idea is, no matter how you’re moving, On is the shoelution™ (reproduction or use of the word “shoelution” is prohibited unless given authorized and written consent provided by absolutely no one). They even have a nifty tagline to go along with the concept: Never Not On. As in, when should you not wear On? Answer: Never.

TO CLARIFY, IT’S STILL A RUNNING SHOE

I can and did run in this shoe. I also can and did do never not running in this shoe in the gym. Ok, so I don’t totally understand how double-negatives work, but the point I’m trying to make is I did a bunch of different athletic stuff in this shoe. Let’s discuss my findings.

The first thing I noticed upon unboxing is the feather-lightness of the cross training shoe. Weighing in at a mere 8oz. for men and 6.6oz for women, it’s by far the lightest shoe in the category. Once I put the shoe on and laced up, the next thing that stood out to me was how sturdy and stable the outsole felt. I already knew this was going to be a huge plus once I hit the gym, but the first test was hitting the streets.

At a light jog, I noticed how breathable the shoe was, with the wind practically brushing over my toes. Once I hit medium stride, I was very appreciative of the very open toe box that allowed my foot to spread out naturally. Then, I hit a couple sprints, where I noticed the locked-in midfoot prevented any slippage, allowing me to go all-out. It’s interesting to note here that although the Cloud X is sufficiently cushioned, it never felt squishy. In fact, the explosive take offs felt as though I was running in minimalist shoes, equipped with shock absorbers.

Ready to Run

NEVER NOT ON

Under most circumstances, I would never wear anything branded a running shoe to the gym. “Why?” you ask. First off, I’m glad you’re inquisitive, you’ll go far with that attitude. The answer is because shoes engineered for constant forward momentum (running) are at the opposite end of the spectrum for those necessitated by being rooted with the ground (lifting weights). Cushioning, for example, is one of the last things you want underfoot when lifting weights. You want your gym shoes to be as stable and flat as possible, to allow you to efficiently direct energy into the weight you’re lifting.

To ruin the suspense for you, these shoes delivered. The outsole provided enough of a solid base that I was able to do every manner of pulling, pushing, jumping, and throwing with no feeling of instability. These athletic shoes are so versatile, that the only athletic activity I would not attempt with them is swimming.
