SAUCONY OMNI 16 – FIRST LOOK

SAUCONY OMNI 16 – FIRST LOOK

AVAILABLE JUNE 2017

Impressive updates in the Saucony Omni 16 provide ultimate support for the pronating runner.

Saucony has been ‘running strong’ since 1898, founded in Pennsylvania just two years after the first Olympic Marathon in Athens, Greece. Dedicated to activity shoes, Saucony exponentially grew after the running frenzy exploded in the US in the early 1970s.

The Saucony Omni running shoe is well established and is a tried and tested stability shoe for over-pronators; those runners who need control over the motion of their foot while running.

The Omni 16 running model was launched out of the Saucony Human Performance and Innovation Lab. This is a one-of-a-kind lab where Saucony perfected the 8mm drop in their shoes, including the redesigned Omni 16.

ASICS GEL CUMULUS 19 – FIRST LOOK

ASICS GEL CUMULUS 19 – FIRST LOOK

AVAILABLE JUNE 2017

19 versions of the Asics Cumulus are testament to the fact this running shoe works for so many runners – both beginners and elite alike. There have been some tweaks along the way as technology and styles change, and the Cumulus 19 is no exception.

The Asics Cumulus 19 offers new colors, new tech and a new feel for the June release.

For the neutral to under-pronator runner, the Cumulus 19 promotes a superior shock dissipation for a smooth ride and superior comfort for road running.

WHAT’S NEW WITH THE ASICS GEL CUMULUS 19?

The most noticeable difference between Cumulus 19 and the previous model #18, is the lesser number of overlays on the shoe. What’s an overlay? To you and me, it’s the the number of seams on the upper part of the shoe. This is most noticeable on the heel and inside of the Cumulus 19 design.

A lesser number gives a smoother look, and a marginally lighter shoe. You’ll be thankful of the latter at mile 24 of a marathon.

WHAT FEATURES REMAIN IN THE ASICS GEL CUMULUS 19?

The winning combination of the smooth ride and cushioned underfoot of the Cumulus shoes stays the same in the Cumulus 19 version. The Convergence GEL Technology and RearFoot GEL Cushioning Technology combines to maintain the super smooth comfort feel for daily long runs.

It’s a smooth operator but also has High Abrasion Rubber pads in the outsole for superior durability so the soles will still be going strong long after you are!

FEATURES OF THE ASICS GEL CUMULUS 19

  • Midsole: FluidRide midsole
  • Cushioning: Rearfoot and Forefoot GEL Technology
  • Colors: Four new colors for both men and women
  • Runner Type: Neutral to under-pronator
  • Weight: Men’s Gel Cumulus 11.3 ounces
  • Weight: Women’s Gel Cumulus 9.1 ounces
  • Drop: Men’s and Women’s 10mm

Altra Escalante: Men’s Review!

TAKING THE ALTRA ESCALANTE OUT FOR A SPIN

I had never worn a pair of Altra running shoes before, so although I was excited to try something new, I also had a few reservations about running in a shoe that was so different to what I was used to, like the zero-drop aspect of the shoe and the wider toe box.

Enter the Altra Escalante!

QUESTIONS I HAD BEFORE RUNNING IN THE ALTRA ESCALANTE

Since I was giving the Altra Escalante’s a test run for the JackRabbit crew, I wanted to consider all the aspects of the shoe that were going to be different from my usual choice and for both my running style and comfort zone.

  • Altra shoes are known for their wider toe box: Would this wider toe box cause an uncomfortable fit and not hold my foot in place properly?
  • Zero-drop shoes: Would the zero-drop dimensions of the running shoe put too much strain on my Achilles and cause any soft tissue strains or issues?
  • Cushioning: While the Altras are not classified as a minimalist running shoe, nevertheless there is less cushioning than what I am used to running in. Would there be enough cushioning in the Altra Escalantes to help keep my “old” knees from acting up?

READY TO HIT THE ROAD IN THE ALTA ESCALANTE

From the first time I laced up the Escalantes, I knew that fit wouldn’t be an issue at all. Score #1! While there is more space in the toe box, the rest of the shoe really locked down my foot and kept it from sliding around inside the shoe. Kudos to the shoe architects at Altra for getting this fit right.

One thing that really stuck out to me immediately, was how well the heel counter of the Escalante locked down my Achilles and kept my foot from sliding up and down. This is a game-changer for athletes looking for a roomier fit in the toe.

My second concern was with the zero drop aspect of the shoe and how my Achilles reacts to the change in geometry under foot. I generally train in shoes with a drop of 4-8 millimeters, and have been ok with those, but the zero-drop just seemed like it might be a bit too extreme for me.

As recommended by the shoe experts at Altra themselves, I took my first few runs slow and was careful to focus on keeping my lower legs well stretched before and after. By my 4th run I was back to my normal pace and mileage and never once experienced more than mild tightness in my Achilles during the buildup.

My third concern was cushioning. I generally don’t like an overly cushioned shoe, but I was worried that this would not have quite enough to protect my worn out knees. However, because this shoe promotes me to run so much more efficiently, I felt like there was a lot less pressure put on my knees and hips than when I run in a more traditional running shoe.

POST-RUN THOUGHTS ON A NEW SHOE EXPERIENCE WITH THE ALTRA ESCALANTE

Overall the Altra Escalante provided a smooth ride while giving me the feel that I could run fast in the shoe if I really wanted to. The fit was one of the better I’ve felt in a running shoe in a long time, and I was pleasantly surprised with the feel underneath my foot. I will definitely be putting the Escalante in my rotation of running shoes, and I am looking forward to logging a lot more miles in the shoe.

Bravo Altra, the Escalante is an excellent shoe for those looking for more room in the toes without compromising on fit in the heel, and runners wanting to experience a more efficient running gait that the Altra shoe promotes.

Four Reasons to Run in the Altra Escalante

Wendy runs 1-2 half marathons per year and works on JackRabbit’s digital/marketing team. While she lives in Colorado, you can usually find her running races in Disneyland.

Four Reasons to Run in the Altra Escalante

However, I recently had the opportunity to spend a couple days with the Altra running team, including Brian Beckstead (President and Co-Founder of Altra Footwear), and have since put more than a few miles on my new pair of Altra Escalante road running shoes. I’m now a believer.

Here are 4 reasons you should try running in the Altra Escalante and why I am an Altra advocate.

1. YOU WANT TO BE MORE COMFORTABLE ON YOUR RUN.

Let’s face it – running can be painful. The older I get, the more important taking care of my body before, during, and after a run is. As soon as I stepped into the Altra Escalante, it was like a breath of fresh air…in-between my toes. That’s because Altra uses what they call a FootShapeTM Toe Box. My feet have room to spread out while I’m running, and I could literally feel breeze between my toes. Just looking at the shoe, my first thought is that it would fit wide, but the heel and arch areas are surprisingly snug while still giving my toes some room to move. I can’t claim this with any scientific proof, but I will tell you that my mile times in these shoes have been a bit quicker. Maybe because I’m feeling more comfortable in them?

2. YOU’VE HAD A FOREFOOT INJURY OR ISSUE.

In my early 20s, I was diagnosed with sesamoiditis, which causes pain under the first metatarsal of the foot. One of the first things my doctor recommended was a lower drop shoe, to limit the amount of pressure I was putting on my forefoot during running. Altra and their zero-drop shoe concept wasn’t around back then, so my choices were pretty limited! The Altra Escalante keeps the heel and the forefoot the same distance from the ground, which keeps my weight more balanced across the entire foot. So far, I’ve been able to run pain free in these shoes!

3. YOU CAN RETURN THEM AFTER 30 DAYS IF YOU DON’T LIKE THEM!

That’s right. You can run in these shoes for 30 days and if you don’t like them, you can take them back to our store to get your money back! What do you have to lose? I will say that my calf muscles were a bit sore the first two times I ran in them. That’s completely normal! If you have been running in a higher drop shoe, your body will need time to adjust. I’ve been rotating the Escalantes into my running schedule by using them on my lower mileage/easy run days. Over time, your body will adjust.

4. THEY’RE THE BEST LOOK ALTRA RUNNING SHOE (IN MY OPINION).

Fashion and function are closer than ever before. Whether I’m on my standard running route or at the grocery store, I’ve noticed that runners are upping their shoe style game. I love that the Escalante comes in both bright and neutral colors and has a heathered design that adds some interest.

What are you waiting for? Find your local JackRabbit store or buy a pair online to see for yourself!

ALTRA LONE PEAK 3.0 – WOMEN’S STAFF REVIEW

DID YOU KNOW? Altra prides themselves on their Fit4Her technology, where the women’s version of every shoe they develop is designed specifically for the female foot. As such, we felt it necessary to review this shoe TWICE! Check out our Men’s review of the Lone Peak 3.0 here, and be on the lookout for some upcoming male/female reviews of other Altra shoes.

I test rode the new Lone Peak 3.0 this past weekend. I have to admit, I was seriously looking forward to it, the overall profile of the shoe looks to be a good match, swipe right. Altra earned my buy-in interest by merely looking at gender variance in running shoe needs, not settling for ‘shrink it and pink it’ mentality. Simply put, Fit4Her speaks to me.

Staff Review by Kina M. - Altra Lone Peak 3.0

The new design looks great, feel like you’re stepping into a badass trail shoe. Improved stone guard protection is well done, outsole grip continued to impress. Everything about their signature toebox design is something we should all sign up for, improved stability, toe splay capacity, build stronger feet, perfect for my bunion, etc. They recommend, and provide easy to follow direction for, transitioning to a zero drop shoe. In full transparency, I did not follow this guidance and experienced nearly everything they said I might.

The size was right per sizing recommendation, but felt like it was ‘too big’. The toebox felt too loose for me, the moderate cushioning and stability just not what I’m looking for in my trail shoes. That said, 2 things come to mind….perhaps their Olympus, as a more cushioned trail option from Altra, is the better choice for me. And secondly, everything this brand stands for tells me I might need to just give it some time. Not ready to swipe left, but…let’s take it slow.
